They were really early in their career and in our 1:1s would share a lot about some of the personal struggles they were going through because they felt comfortable due to our shared identities. Their performance in the workplace wasn't stellar and it was really challenging to balance performance expectations and holding space for them, especially as it began to feel like they were taking advantage of my empathy and understanding. How do you navigate maintaining that balance?
