Instead of seeing the world for themselves they are objectively becoming less indulged with their happiness and in reality. People cut themselves away from reality which cultivates into a state of an illusion of contentment. They try to be like one another, instead of being unique and being themselves. In doing so, it allows people to fake their happiness. Ray Bradbury displays this realism through Mildred, Montag's wife. Mildred is described as cold and distant from Montag's point of view, not remembering important memories. Society can be seen with Mildred's suicide attempt because she pretends to not be aware of it, actively denying it. This leads Montag to realize that nobody listens anymore. She is upset with her life, spending most of her time watching television. Bradbury illustrates Mildred as a shell of a human being. She has no real connection with anyone close except for the television shows she watches. Mildred distracts herself with technology to reveal that her true feelings are hidden behind a mask, similar to the people in our society today.
