A monster escaped its cell from a laboratory and begins to kill anyone that gets in its way. A groups of four friends (Will, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas) were playing at Mike's house when Mike's mother made them stop playing. On their way home, Will separates briefly from his group of friends and feels a presence. When he gets home, he notices that his older brother (Jonathan) and mother (Joyce) are not home. Will felt the monsters presence and ran into a shed towards the back of his home, got a gun and was prepared to shoot, but the light bulb inside the shed flickered and Will disappeared. Will's mother noticed he was missing the next morning. She goes to the police, who do nothing about it. In this episode, it is suspected that Barbara and Will are both stuck in the upside down (a second world based on the world we live in). This world is darker and it is where the monster lives. Nancy finally tells Barbara's mother that she is missing. Mike has been keeping Eleven hidden at his home. While the boys are at school, Eleven explores Mike's home. She begins to have memories of her life in the laboratory. Some of those memories are of a scientist from the lab who was behind all of her testing and acted as a father figure to her. He would ask Eleven to move objects with her mind. She also remembers when she was forced back into her cell and killed the men who escorted her. Joyce believes that Will is using lights and electricity to communicate, so she sets up Christmas lights all over her living room. Some of the lights have an alphabet grid that she wrote and used to communicate with Will. She asked Will if he was alive and he answered "yes." Then she asked if he was safe and he answered "no" and something began to stretch into her living room walls. The other boys asked Eleven to take them to Will. They got upset with her when she took them to his home because they did not understand that he was there, but in the upside down world. At the end of the episode, they hear sirens and run towards them and see a body being pulled out of the water.

Jonathan and Will were closer to Joyce than they were to their father. Dustin's father was not mentioned in the show, but he also had a very close relationship to his mother. Will and Nancy's mother had more authority than their father did. Dad seemed to never know where his kids were and constantly asked mom for help. Will and Nancy listened to their mother more than they did their father. In the case of Eleven, her father figure was the closest person she had while in the laboratory.
