My music technology program is based on an inquiry model. The structure or parameters that I provide are that the students must collectively compose material to record, perform and release. However, because the space hosts students interested in classical, jazz, electronic, sound design etc. - each year the way this looks changes. One year there was a group of students interested in analogue synthesis. They proposed that they wanted to try and build one. So I secured funding through a grant, found community experts and organized a space. Here were the results (as part of the funding I am able to show my students pictures publically):

Art Gallery Performance
https://youtu.be/k8J4u67v1kQ

Recordings
https://squareonebc.bandcamp.com/track/richard-wembley-soul-trapper

https://squareonebc.bandcamp.com/track/manticore-princess

https://squareonebc.bandcamp.com/track/no-presets-available

Foreign Domestic Helpers in HK- A Process Drama

Are you sensing a theme in my responses?

I did a process drama project a few years ago that centred around the Foreign Domestic Helper situation in Hong Kong. Many families here employ a helper from a plethora of nearby countries to help in the home, and especially to help care for children and elderly family members. Problems have arisen from the interpretation of the rather loose stipulations on how FDH are to be supported by employers, and that, along with some ingrained discriminatory ideas have led to problems.
One particular activity had to do with the standard employment conditions and contracts supplied by the HK gov't. After doing some work which involved the students collectively creating a central character, who they named 'Taya', we began to look at what her employment contract might look like. I provided the official documents, but the class quickly left me behind as they poured through the material together, and grew dismayed with what they discovered. They then proceeded to look up more specific information regarding HK's minimum wage for non-domestic helpers, and compared notes about what their own families did. Their independent work informed the character they had created, and ended up in the creation of a scene where she (the character) sought out the help of a gov't agency (which the students found out about through their research) about how her conditions might be improved.
It was a pretty exciting moment for me as their teacher, to watch them take such ownership of their learning.

Digital IBL Resources

Chris Stanger
For many teachers their aim is to foster 21st century learning practices and infuse digital tools into IBL experiences.

For generating ideas about topics there are myriad strategies. One is to have students access multimodal digital libraries such as Learn 360, and Discovery Education as a way of exploring topics or getting ideas for topics. There is also more traditional online resources such as Britannica Online, which would be familiar to many teachers. For access to each of these, teachers need to create accounts. Some school districts in BC have district wide accounts so teachers and students can access these resources using the District access codes. See below for links.

For note taking or document creating there are many technologies to assist learners. Google Docs is the classic shared text medium. Recently more people are using Office 365. Office OneNote is a digital tool that is really useful as it allows a user to type, record audio, capture images, share to the cloud, edit and repurpose, categorize… If you haven’t used it, here is a short primer: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/video-what-is-onenote-be6cc6cc-3ca7-4f46-8876-5000f013c563

As for presenting learning, video is overwhelmingly becoming the medium for students to share their learning. An article in 'Presentation Guru' magazine recommends numerous digital presentation tools. The list includes Office Mix (part of the Office 365 suite) which allows users to create videos with PowerPoint. Camtasia is another powerful video creation, editing and video uploading tool. It is not free, but you can download a trial version! A more limited video creation tool is Snagit, which allows users to captures various screen shots in order to make demo videos. For more creative presentations there is PowToon or VideoScribe, which are animation type video creation applications. These tools use standard slide type formats and animation functions that are easy to learn.

Interestingly, Makerspaces are becoming popular in schools, particularly, in Learning Commons spaces and ways to both explore, physically create and share learning. Here is a link that explores this expression of IBL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n7aBQDubLU

These are just a few examples of digital resources and tools that one can draw on to support IBL experiences in schools.

Resources:

Britannica Online at: https://school.eb.com/?target=%2Flevels

Camtasia at: https://camtasia-for-mac.en.softonic.com/mac

Discovery Education at: http://www.discoveryeducation.com/

Learn 360 at: https://learn360.infobase.com/p_Login.aspx

MindShareLearning at: http://mindsharelearning.ca/5-reasons-you-should-invest-in-a-learning-commons-for-your-school-2/,

OfficeMix at: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/important-information-about-office-mix-preview-end-of-service-c1c04f84-a7bb-4602-9645-258017155258?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

OneNote at: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/video-what-is-onenote-be6cc6cc-3ca7-4f46-8876-5000f013c563

PowToon at: https://www.powtoon.com/examples/

Presentation Guru at: https://www.presentation-guru.com/create-the-best-video-presentations-with-these-innovative-tools/

We had them plan a trip and they needed to build and pack a suitcase that they could carry on with them. The suitcase had to be standard carry on size and could not weigh more than 14kg. Students had to build an itinerary and indicate the departure and return times. This was a super fun activity that the students really enjoyed.

(Ram) For my high school Science class, I bought a tap water testing kit. It came with all the materials you need plus workbook and quizzes. I had my students bring samples of water from their taps at home and I also asked staff to bring water from their taps at home. I brought samples of water from my tap at home and the students also collected samples of water from the taps at the school. I was truly curious about the quality of the water. I was happy to find that the quality of the water was good. The water testing kit was practically the same kit used to test the quality of water commercially. It was truly a good inquiry-based kit put together by the company that sold it.
