Building trust is especially crucial when it comes to establishing TSR. Hence, it is important for teachers to take initiative when it comes to building trust with students.

Jigsaw is a grouping strategy which focus on cooperative learning. Through the process, I learnt that this strategy promotes engagement and empathy by giving each member of the group an essential role to play in the activity. I feel this strategy is useful because it allows each group "experts" to become knowledgable and are given the empowerment to teach others. Hence, it saves time and benefits students as they learn from each other. I hope to be able to incorporate this teaching strategy in my teaching.

Suk San

Key takeaway in session 2

HoBeenChieh
In session 2, we discussed about how to set positive classroom culture. The jigsaw method allowed us to discuss on a particular area in depth, then we can share our points with each other in our home group. This allows me to gain more insights on the different areas on setting positive classroom culture. For example, to maintain positive discipline in classroom, we can make use of suitable verbal cues and use reward system to reinforce positive behaviours. What surprise me was we have to work on an “action plan” for an assumed class profile we set at the start of the lesson. We started to brainstorm about how to make use of these strategies to tackle the students that we may face in the real classrooms. The different areas( establish interaction and rapport, maintaining positive discipline, setting expectations and routines, building trusts, empowering learners) are actually not independent from each other. When we look at how to form a plan, we need to consider all different areas at all times. For instance, in the first lesson, we need to connect with students and set some basic ground rules , which involves “ establishing interaction and rapport” and “setting expectations and routines”. And in fact, we would need to look at other areas as well. After session 2, I realised successful classroom management need careful planning and thorough consideration on different factors, we have to think about it before we step on for he first lesson.

After the lesson, I had a much clearer idea how to craft class rules and routines. We shouldn’t create too many routines for students to follow at beginning of the year. We could set routines and rules based on cases happened in classroom. To deliver the knowledge to students with different level of ability, we need to differentiate the instructions to them. To empower learners, we could set different sets of worksheets. This could encourage students with lower ability to learn academic knowledge to believe that they also able to do well in class.

Jin Jing

I think it is an effective way for exchanging ideas, as well as promoting collaboration and interaction among peers. It also ensures that each and every participant has a crucial role to play as he or she would be responsible for conveying the expert knowledge to the home group. The final task of constructing an action plan was also very meaningful as it helped in consolidating all the material that was discussed and make the link between theory and practice.
