market structure identified: perfect competition/ oligopolies

1.price elasticity demand for canned products.
- demand for canned food is inelastic. Even with a change in price of canned food, it will lead to a small change in quantity demanded as canned food products have long shelf life which makes it a very important necessity during times like this. Although the current pandemic helps to further prove that canned goods are inelastic, it is important to note that food will always be a necessity. the biggest plus points of canned foods are that they are resourceful and that they are able to be preserved. hence, no matter the price increase or decrease of canned goods, consumer purchases will not be significantly affected.

Indeed, team might also want to explore (1) price elasticity when we compare specific brands of canned food to expand this portion in your report. It would be easier after you chose a country to work on.

:seen in source 2
-the global Canned Food market is valued at 23160 million US$ in 2020 is expected to reach 30370 million US$ by the end of 2026, growing at a CAGR of 3.9%
: as seen in source 5
page 6,
product : StarKist Chunk Light Tuna in Water, 5 oz.
> Units sold in 2018: 91.6 million
> Sales in 2018: $87.4 million
> Price per pack $0.86 per can
product : Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup, 10.5 oz.
> Units sold in 2018: 78.8 million
> Sales in 2018: $82.4 million
> Price per pack $3.98 per pack of 4

these two canned goods are not of the same category but they are the two most sold canned goods in 2018 in the united states. The current price in Walmart for a 4 pack cream of mushroom is retailing at $5.87, yet it is sold out. this shows that the price of campbell cream of mushroom soup is inelastic. despite the price increase of $2 per pack or 47.5 % increase, consumers still purchase it.

This would fit nicely as part of the overview of the global trend in consumption of canned food.

2. Social interests affect the demand for canned goods.
- more demands for canned food due to Covid-19 due to its non-perishable nature.

: stats from source 4
- In the united states, sales of canned meat, chickpeas and tuna went up by 31.8%, 25.6% and 24.9% respectively
- Sales of tinned vegetables in Germany soared by 80% and canned fruits by 70%

as seen from source 1 :
- "The new purchase limits continue to be set slightly higher than what a typical shopper purchases and is sufficient to meet the daily grocery needs of an average family in Singapore".
- more and more people are going after canned goods, even though they are not as nutritious as fresh foods, but because they are more practical.

Q2. More specifically, what lead to the panic buying? There's one specific demand determinants accounting for such a behavior from consumers.
(Factor: expectations of buyers)
Due to the covid-19 outbreak, people expect cities to go into lockdown and that they will have to stay at home due to social distancing. This will cause the demand for canned food to increase as people will stock up and hoard these non-perishable food as they have a longer shelf life and don't require refrigeration to keep them from spoiling.

Q3. Who imposed the limits in purchase? What's the rationale for doing so? In a country with such intervention, what's the best economic system that could be used to describe the country? Answering these would link your microeconomic analysis to macroeconomic analysis.
In Singapore, Ntuc also known as Fairprice imposed purchase limits on household items including canned food. This is to ensure that everyone living in Singapore can get a chance to buy these items. The economy of Singapore is a highly developed capitalist mixed economy. A mixed economic system protects private property and allows a level of economic freedom in the use of capital, but also allows for governments to interfere in economic activities in order to achieve social aims. While government intervention is kept at a minimum, government entities such as the sovereign wealth fund Temasek control corporations responsible for 60% of GDP.

3. Increase in consumer demands for canned foods in Asia Pacific

: seen in source 3
-With reference to the recent estimates of FAO, China and Korea were the largest importers of crab meat, after the United States, in 2017. Japan alone imported 40% more crab from Newfoundland, Canada in 2017.

- India, as of 2017, holds wide number of local vegetarian canned food products, such as sterilised pav bhaji, curried parata, and dal

-food presence of major supermarkets, such as 7-Eleven, E-mart, Big C, etc. and the increasing internet penetration, online market for the purchase of canned food products, helped surged the market growth for canned products.

Q4. What facilitated the movement canned products (imports) between countries? With respect to your chosen country, find out the key countries in which the canned products were obtained/do they produce most domestically? Find out also the policies that help to facilitate this. Examine, in the light of the current covid-19 situation, how supply of such products could be affected.
International trade transactions are facilitated by international financial payments, in which the private banking system and the central banks of the trading nations play important roles.
Spain manufacturer of canned food have exported to United States about 21%. Spain is therefore the main supplier to the United States. Greece and India come second and third, with 11% and 9% of the American imports respectively.
A policy that helps to facilitate imports and exports are the trade policy which includes any policy that directly affects the flow of goods and services between countries, including import tariffs, import quotas, voluntary export restraints, export taxes, export subsidies, and so on. Another policy is the domestic policy. Domestic policy can be classified as any type of domestic tax or subsidy policy, or any type of government regulation that affects the behavior of firms or consumers.

Supplies of products used to make canned food are severely affected due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the novel coronavirus, many people have fell sick which leads to a decrease in workers being available for work. Therefore, some factories have to be shut down as workers have gotten sick and some have died. For example, Tyson Foods, the United States’ largest meat processor have warned the people that there will be limited supply of their products available in grocery stores until they are able to reopen their facilities that are currently closed. With less workers processing meat, there would be lesser supply for canned food. More people have been staying home due to the pandemic, and cooking more while eating out less. Many people have been stacking up on groceries especially meat. This leads to people panic buying as they are worried that they do not have enough food and end up buying more groceries than they actually needed. This results in excess food bought by consumers which means there would be lesser supply of food used to make canned food.

4. Changes in taste and preferences for canned products

:seen in source 4
- more consumers prefer fresh food instead of canned food as it is a healthier choice and it can helps to boost their immune system during this pandemic

: seen in source1

- Approximately

eight from ten Romanians consume homemade

canned and preserved fruits and vegetables.

:seen in source 4
-Change in perception of canned food which results in a decrease in demand for canned food.
-Chinese people do not like canned food. Preserved products used to be the centrepiece of Chinese dinner tables, elevated to status symbol. Now they feel that "eating canned food was like eating Chinese food that was meant for foreigners".

Q5. Do continue to find out further ways/strategies that the producers of such canned products adopt in response to the mentioned change in taste and preferences of their consumers. Again, this should be in the context of your chosen country.
: debuted its Well Yes! Brand of soup in 2016, which the company toits as offering “clean, simple and nutritious ingredients.” They burnished its credentials by reformulating its existing product line and spending hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire companies to help position it as a go-to marketplace for consumers interested in knowing more about their food and where it comes from (Bolthouse Farms, a maker of carrots, smoothies, juices and dressings was acquired for 1.55billion in 2012, Plum organics in 2013, a children’s food and snack company. Garden Fresh Gourmet was purchased for 231 million, bringing refrigerated salsa, hummus and dips into Campbell’s portfolio. Spent 700 million to purchase natural and organic brand Pacific Foods of Oregon)
