The term "K-Pop" means Korean popular music. This music can involve all kinds of genres within it like hip hop, pop, jazz, R&B, classical, disco, etc. Entertainment industries and artists associated with K-pop are considered apart of the "Idol Industry". The Idol Industry refers to any celebrity working in the field of K-pop and is mainly based off of fandom culture. Idols are highly manufactured and trained under big entertainment agencies. They are known to have perfect public images and for their visuals, music, fashion, and dance. They have undergone extreme training and often start in the agencies as preteens or even kids. They spend significant time building a relationship with their fans through social media, concerts, and fan-meets. Idols can either be in groups or solo and are held to a superb standard. K-pop idols are often given strict contracts to keep their image clean. These contracts can include rules like dating bans, drinking bans, even not being allowed to have their own personal cell phones. The schedules these idols go through are rigorous and they often are worked late into the night then have to wake up early in the morning to do it all over again.

For more information visit these links:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-pop#:~:text=March%202021),part%20of%20South%20Korean%20culture.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_idol

The Uprising Problem of Suicide

Within the K-Pop community the rise in suicides has been frightening. It is no secret that the mental health scene is shunned upon in South Korea and especially so in the K-Pop community. It is only now that idols have started to speak out about it. Idols are held at such a high standard by both their companies and the fans to be perfect that they feel as though if they make one wrong move it will be over. The hate idols receive if they do something wrong is horrendous and the companies have a reputation to treat idols as objects. On top of this already stressful lifestyle, many idols also have pre-existing mental health issues of their own. All of this has resulted in the rise of suicides within the community.

A Simple Solution

To help aid this rise in suicide a simple solution would be for companies to provide mental health care for their idols. Companies should provide their idols with therapy and even psychiatry if needed. This would help idols deal with their stress and any other issues that they may be going through. Therapy is good for everyone to do, but especially in this line of work. Healthy coping mechanisms and outlets are super important to maintaining a healthy mental state. It would show the companies care for their idols, but also help be a preventative measure.
