1. How comfortable are you in that language?
I'm pretty comfortable in both English and Spanish.

2. What language did you learn?
I learned Spanish growing up with my family. I had to learn English later when I was able to go to school here in Texas.

3. How old were you when you learned that language?
I began learning English when I started school in America. I think I finally caught up to the rest of my class around 5th grade or so.

4. How often do you use the additional language that you learned?
I speak Spanish to my family every day. My wife is also fluent in Spanish as well. I speak English every day at work.

5. What helped you to learn that additional language?
It helped me when I was forced into translating in situations with adults. Though I often didn't know specific medical or adult language, I used context clues and asked questions from the medical professionals then explained it the best I could with my family.

6. Was there something that you teacher or school did that really supported your learning of an additional language?
I dont really remember having any teachers that were very helpful in my learning of English as a second language. My parents helped me early on to understand Spanish.

7. What helped you, as the learner, to be successful in learning an additional language?
As uncomfortable as it made me at the time, I think being forced into situations where I needed to help my parents translate important doctor's visits and things of that nature really helped me to work harder to grasp the language.

8. Is there anything else you would like to share?
No.

Now, it's not every day but majority of the week when I talk to my parents on the phone.
5. Asking questions, repeating, listening carefully, practicing to myself
6. Not really, other than taking a required Spanish class
7. Practicing and surrounding myself with other people who speak it
8.
1. I am comfortable speaking conversational German. I am not fluent enough to speak in depth. 2. I learned German at the age of 21. I began studying it out of necessity - living in the country for four years. 3. Living in the culture / immersion and necessity was beneficial to my learning. 4. What also helped with my learning is I am fluent and competent in my native language. 5. An obstacle / barrier that I experienced were with my own ability and self-perception (fear of making a mistake, not feeling comfortable enough to take a risk, insecure) 6. I no longer use/speak the language much (moved away from the country - not needed) 7. It was not so difficult because I could connect aspects to my native language.
