Since the 1980's, there was a desire for a nursing informatics specialty to be created. In 2008, the Technology Guiding Education and Reform collaboration (TIGER) released their recommendations to include an informatics course as part of the nursing school curriculum. The cirriculum was to include basic computer competencies, information literacy, and information management. Advanced nurse practitioners lean heavily on informatics for multiple reasons. The biggest of the reasons being electronic charting and electronic health record keeping. Technology has promoted to use of computers to chart electronically. Learning how to maneuver through an electronic health record enables providers to document, assess trends in vital signs or lab results, order diagnostic test and prescriptions. Coding and billing is done electronically now. Informatics allow for templates that increase the amount of time spent with a patient, and decrease charting time. Templates can provide missing pertinent assessment information and can decrease medical errors.
