The electoral college is a group of people that elects the president and Vice President. Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes based on population. The pros of the electoral college is that it protests minority interests, and directs more power to the states. The cons of it is that it's complicated and dissuades people from voting and the person a majority of Americans favor may not win.

The electoral college is used during elections in the U.S. How it works is each state gets a certain amount of electoral votes which is based off of each state’s population. Total there will always be 538 electoral votes which means a candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win the election. The amount of electoral votes each state gets is determined by the census that takes place every so many years. If a state’s popular vote favors one party, the elector for that state can vote against what the people want. This also means that there have been some cases where more people overall (the popular vote) vote for one party but the other party wounds up winning because of electoral votes, as what was seen in the 2016 election. An advantage to this system is smaller states still get represented despite their small populations. A disadvantage of this system is that the electors can go against what the people wanted in that state which makes it so a persons vote wounds up being meaningless and unaccounted for.
