The first thing you do when that alarm clock rings is roll over and grab for your phone. You update twitter before you brush your teeth. You have a routine, whether it’s checking your emails first and then Facebook, or if it’s scrolling backwards in the groupchat and reading all the conversation you missed.

You tell yourself you just wanna do a quick check-up or a sleep meditation, but you always end up falling asleep with your face pressed against your Tumblr-dash.

There's a difference between using social media to broaden your horizon and just swallowing up empty content –and you're doing the latter. Sure, you do the first thing too, but sitting all day taking online quizzes and browsing brainless content takes up the majority of your time. And sometimes those things can be fun, but like vitamins –only in small doses.

You take very specific notes on which posts get more likes and which don’t -very specifically! You practically keep a journal of all your likes and follows and draw more graphs than a mathematician. You know when most people are online, and you plan your postings specifically after those hours. In fact, some might believe you were doing a social study, but you’re just that invested.

You care about how your profile looks, that’s understandable, but when you spend hours contemplating and outlining, that’s when we have a problem. The first couple of weeks you get a new profile, you’re basically a chameleon, constantly changing your aesthetic and username until it’s perfect. You spend so much time worrying about how your profile picture looks, you forget to even enjoy the app at all.

Conclusion- FOMO

Essentially what it all boils down to is FOMO –Fear of missing out. FOMO is a form of social anxiety that’s become more and more common among people. With social media everything moves extremely fast, and that can be stressful to some people. They don’t wanna feel like they’re being shut out of the group, just because they missed something. If you’d just been on social media when that one thing happened, you wouldn’t be feeling like this right now. And since you don’t know when the next big thing will happen, there’s only one solution –to always be on 24/7.
