         <description><![CDATA[<div>(<strong>Technique</strong> | <strong>Example</strong> | <strong>Effect)</strong><br>Varied sentence length, eg.&nbsp; "About how he was dead." vs "She was like a shepherd - the children gathered around her, gathered close, under one of the old chestnut trees where the kids played conkers at recess." |The varying sentence length shows the scattered thinking of Isla in this time of shock and grief. It shows that she is processing her environment more than she is processing the death of Tom.<br><br> Repetition (of death, and of unity). eg. "The day Tom Balinski died", "About how he was dead" vs "Most of them were holding hands", "They were all still holding hands", "...gathered around her", "...gathered close", &nbsp; The repetition of the fact that Tom Balinski had died illustrates that Isla is constantly thinking about, and still taking in, his death, and the finality of death. The repetition of people gathering, and holding hands, demonstrated to us how the children (Toms friends) are grieving, and processing his death.</div><div><br>&nbsp;<br>Z</div>]]></description>
