Appearance played the biggest part in the "identity" theme in "Twelth Night" by Shaespeare.

VIOLA
“Conceal me what I am, and be my aid / For such disguise as haply shall become / The form of my intent” (I.ii.51-53)

When Viola takes on the disguise early in the play, it applies lots of confusion in the play to the reader

This image relates to the theme because in this part of the play, there was a question of identity asking who and why Viola would take on a dusguise of someone else

Gender identity had a great role in the play as it brought up more suspense throughout the entire story

VIOLA
"There is a fair behavior in thee, captain,
And though that nature with a beauteous wall
Doth oft close in pollution, yet of thee
I will believe thou hast a mind that suits
With this thy fair and outward character." (1.2.50-54)

This quote takes place when Viola decides to take the role of Cesario when she disguises herself

Mistaken Identity

the uses of disguise by Shakespeare lead to a lot of cases of "mistaken Identity"

CAPTAIN
"Be you his eunuch, and your mute I'll be.
When my tongue blabs, then let mine eyes not see." (1.2.65-66)

Since Viola has a high voice, it would be hard for her to act like a boy. In the play we learned about eunuch. An eunuch is castrated man. If Viola pretends to a eunuch it would make sense for her to act like a boy and still have a high pitched voice

Love plays a great part in the play. This ties in with identity because character in love are in love with the fake identity of another

OLIVIA
Thy tongue, thy face, thy limbs, actions and spirit
Do give thee five-fold blazon. Not too fast! Soft,
soft!
Unless the master were the man. How now?
Even so quickly may one catch the plague? (1.5.297-301)

This quote tells us about Olivias love toward "Cesario" and Olivia is surprised she is in love
