The first woman in the world documented to earn a university degree in Architecture (MIT, 1890)

Personal and Academic Background

Full name: Sophia Gregoria Hayden (later Sophia Hayden Bennett).

Date of birth: October 17, 1868, Santiago, Chile.

Date of death: February 3, 1953, Winthrop, Massachusetts, U.S.

University studies:

Institution: Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Admission: 1886, as the first woman admitted into the architecture program.

Degree: Bachelor’s in Architecture (four-year program). Graduated with honors in 1890.

Life Circumstances During Her Studies

Marital status / children: She was single and childless while studying at MIT. In 1900, she married William Blackstone Bennett but never had children of her own.

Living situation: As a young woman, she lived with her grandparents in Boston; during her student years she remained in the Boston/Cambridge area.

Support and opposition: Historical accounts do not record a specific individual who helped her enter MIT, but her academic excellence is noted. Like many women of her time, she faced discrimination and had difficulties pursuing a long-term career in architecture despite her degree.

Professional Career

First major work: Winner of the design competition for the Woman’s Building at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago (1893). It was the only executed architectural work of hers. Although successful, the project was overshadowed by tensions with the fair’s committee and gender prejudice, which affected her career.

Postgraduate studies: No records exist of her completing a postgraduate degree; her highest formal academic credential was her MIT degree in 1890.

Historical Context

Although earlier women designed buildings (e.g., Lady Elizabeth Wilbraham, 17th century, debated by historians), and others were the “first” in professional practice or licenses (e.g., Louise Blanchard Bethune in the U.S.; Julia Morgan, first woman at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris), Sophia Hayden is the first documented woman to earn a formal university architecture degree (MIT, 1890).
