Black Death Plague doctors weren't actually doctors, people just wore the masks so they could smell herbs and not breathe 'bad air.' Medicines have changed a lot over time. In ancient times people didn't understand that illness came from bacteria and germs. Now we do and we have advanced medicines and surgery. In my research about disease and Illness I learned about the Black Death, how ancient people treated illnesses and stayed healthy and how we do all of that today.

The Black Death existed a very long time ago and wiped millions of people from the face of the earth. Scholars think that the first Black Death cases happened over in china and first hit the world in 541 C.E. and then again in the 1320s. The Black Death killed the most people from 1320-1340 and it killed about 75 million people worldwide. The Black Death was caused by Yersinia Pestis and it was given to people from the fleas and lice that bit the rats that carried the death and then bit people, giving them the plague. Next when people went out into the streets some of them wore name tags so they could be identified if they caught the plague while they were out and about. When the plague infected a person, they normally didn't start to show symptoms for the first week, but once the fever cam they had about three days until it killed them. The Black Death was appropriately named. It was extremely deadly and killed millions of people.

A long time ago people did really weird things to stay healthy and not get sick. Back in time, before they had good soap or really stayed clean people made soap out of fat and ashes from a fire and then boiled it over a fire. It seems unsanitary but the ‘soap’ actually kind of helped remove dirt from a person’s body. In Asia people took baths in rice water and used crushed up plants. But people didn’t really bathe a lot because they thought that dirt and grim blocked pores and kept germs from getting in. Another way they kept dirt and grim in was by wearing linen because they thought that it kept the dirt and sweat on them. Despite all of this, people actually had some effective ways of staying healthy. To protect themselves from smallpox they scratched a person’s arm then put fluid from smallpox pustules in it. People back then did really gross things to stay clean and healthy. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t.

Nowadays people have a lot more efficient, clean and healthier ways of staying clean and healthy. Due to modern day surgery, drugs and a lot of other things, people now live to the average age of 70 and older, which is a lot longer than back then. The average age then was 47. People have developed websites that can detect Malaria and other diseases. That way people can get medical help as soon as possible. We also have technology that can develop efficient vaccines that help keep people from getting diseases. We also have surgery that can fix deformities caused by viruses and other bacteria. We now have better antibacterials that can help keep people from getting infections and sick in general. Drugs can vary from vaccines to painkillers all they way to tylenol and other medicines like that. Because of our scientist and our technology we have more efficient medicines and surgery. People live longer and stay healthier throughout their life.

Throughout history people have done things to stay healthy, some of their strategies worked and some of it didn’t. Nowadays we understand germs and illness and we have technology that can help us stay healthy, clean and safe. Our thoughts and ideas about germs have evolved a lot through history and we can stay safer because of it.
