I think that the most prominent theme that resonates with this play is to NOT MAKE UP LIES AND SPREAD FALSE THINGS. Such gossip can literally ruin someone's life. You see this in how Mary accused Martha and Karen of being secret lovers. It ended resulting in Karen's marriage falling apart, and losing her best friend Martha, who shot herself in the head.

Summary

The Children's Hour by Lillian Hellman discusses many themes and topics, one of them being the then shocking topic of lesbianism in the 1930's society. Unlike today's more accepting society, the 1930s were times of hiding for any queer people. At first it seems that Mary was simply telling a lie, but as you find out, Martha actually did have feelings for Karen. She felt her only escape from the shame she felt was suicide. Mary's near pathological tendencies are highlighted in the text as well. She torments and perpetrates not only her classmates, but the two women who run the school. Because of her accusations against them, the school ends up having to be shut down, ruins Karen's marriage, and pushes Martha to suicide.

A Letter: Mary to Karen

Dear Karen,

I truly apologize. After I found out about Martha...well, let's just say I may feel the need to change my ways. Grandma is getting older everyday; it's time I do something with myself. But I still have to wonder: could something have really happened between the two of you? I heard that you left Dr. Cardin.
I feel terrible. This is the first time, maybe ever, that I have felt remorseful of something I've done. I may even apologize to Rosalie. The way I tormented that girl...it just wasn't right. But, as they say, everything happens for a reason.

Sincerely,
Mary Tillford
