-Content Area Themes and Topics

Part 1: The Blue Ribbon Brand was once a couple different companies, but still operates in the town where it originated as a glass making one. This could tie into content of how changing landscapes and the economy constantly evolving effects local businesses. Especially when looking at topics like the Great Depression and other financial hardships during U.S. History.

Part 2: In our government lobbying is one of the most protected principals and even at the local level you can find examples of lobbying. While its not as common in local council meetings showing students how even at a local level there will be lobbying to get things pushed for. Just like in D.C. lobbying is big business and huge part of this countries governmental process.

Part 3: The library offers a free pass to Eastern State Penitentiary. This museum in particular has a deep and rich history about rehabilitation in the United States. It was once the biggest prison in the world and focused on solitary confinement as a way to treat intimates. I could explain more about it to the students and do a lesson on how the United States has treated inmates throughout its history, using the penitentiary as an example.

Part 4: The Williamstown historical society committee has over 300 hundred members. This shows that the town really values its history and values public history. Public history is often a side of history that is overlooked and is very important. Museums, historical societies, reenactment events, and more are all part of public history and that can be taught in my classroom.

Part 5: Tradition and cultures are what make up a community. When looking at communities in history a look into a community can be studying their traditions to see what the community values. Like the Williamstown community, viewing how family values are important based off their community events.

-Issues of Equity

Part 1: With 34.6% of students being classified as economically disadvantaged, it appears there are a large number of families struggling. The average income is also 16% lower than the state average as well. Many students may have families struggling to get by and it is definitely something to note.

Part 2: The roofing issue at the school has still not been resolved and could be causing health issues for teachers and students. The school has found money to invest in other things such as sports equipment and enough money to build a new playground in the elementary school. Money seems to be being allocated to other issues and this one is being ignored and not getting the funding it needs.

Part 3: Some more issues of equity through the library would show that not everyone in the community has access to internet, computers or WIFI. The library also offers printing, copying and laminating. These resources being available indicates that they are being used by the people in the community. With 34% of student being classified as economically disadvantaged its clear that these resources are helping those families in the community.

Part 4: An issue of equity that I noticed when doing the community mapping was, the historical society at the Ireland Hoffer house does not include much African American history. The town has a big African American population and their history is not talked about or included as much in the local historical society. The historical society mainly focuses on the accomplishments of a view individuals and companies. Not really focusing on the accomplishments of African Americans on the towns history. Additionally, their Facebook page only posts historical artifacts, pictures, houses, and more on the white history of the town. There is not much on minority groups such as African Americans, Asian Americans or the Indigenous population. All of these groups have a good size population in Williamstown and are being left out.

Part 5: Not many families may have the extra funds to have things like toys for their children. Families may have enough to get by, but not enough extra cash to get their children popular toys, books, crayons, etc.
