To obtain these keys, they must face obstacles. Coraline's obstacle was her mom hiding the key from her. Alice's obstacle was figuring out which foods would make her grow and shrink so that she can go through the door. 
The keys are needed again near the end of the story as a way out for the protagonists. Once again they have to go through a series of challenges to obtain the key and free themselves from the antagonist. But this time, the challenges' difficulty has increased. They were made to prevent the protagonist from escaping. Coraline has a scrawny black cat. Alice has the Cheshire cat. Both cats can appear and disappear on a whim. They are both cunning and mischievous. 
The cats try to warn the main characters about the dangers of their dream worlds; without directly telling them. They are our protagonists' allies who help them escape. 
The cats differ in their personality and actions. The Cheshire Cat acts as a guide for Alice during her adventures in Wonderland. It is depicted as an intelligent and mischievous character that sometimes helps Alice and occasionally gets her into trouble.
Coraline's cat appears to be sarcastic and ironic. The queen welcomes Alice to a game of croquet and the other mother welcomes Coraline to a meal. All the characters in the world are scared to disobey them (villans), that's why most of them are too scared to help out our protagonist (Alice and Coraline). There is a reason why they would want to keep out main charaters though. They want to kill them to get benefits. That's why they lure them into a world that they make seem beautiful and perfect in the child's eyes. In both stories, the main characters follow an animal through a portal that leads to an alternate world. The doorway leads them to a magical world full of their wishes and desires. The alternative world was set up to appeal to the children, hoping that they would stay. 
They compare the two worlds making one more appealing than the other. In the normal world, they show the world as a plain grey world with nothing to entertain our characters. While in the other world, it's like an explosion of color. Gaming is a magical world for me. It is filled with diversity. It always has a new side that you can explore. In the story, the protagonists enter the magical world and enjoy it because they are filled with boredom in the real world. I am the same.
