The Pause

I appreciated reading this article and am particularly drawn to the idea of the pause–just stopping for a moment to ground ourselves before reacting. When I first starting working at CCA, I had the amazing luck of getting to work with an administrator who had been at the college for two decades. One thing she would always tell me about working in education is that folks will want to move forward a million miles per hour, but if you just take a moment to pause and ground yourself, it helps everyone gain a better perspective and not act in such a reactionary way. I have tried to remember to practice this regularly in my role, especially when we go through periods where it feels like we need to constantly put out fires. Taking a moment breathe and relax, helps us be present with what the actual issues and needs are.

Being present for 4 or more hours

Nel Noddings wrote “I do not need to establish a deep, lasting, time-consuming personal relationship with every student. What I must do is to be totally and non-selectively present to the student—to each student—as he or she addresses me. The time interval may be brief but the encounter is total. I read this article after spending 4 hours meeting 1:1 with students on zoom about their projects. I have noticed a direct connection between my level of calmness and focus and the quality of the interaction with the student. It's really hard work to maintain this across four hours but when I can the time flows smoothly and I actually feel energized at the end. When I rush students into answer or direct the conversation too much we always seem to run out of time. I enjoyed reading this article a lot and found it very inspiring.

Walk, Don't Run

The concepts of mindfulness, the pause, and being present are so valuable. In a leadership series I participated in during fall 2021, one of the memorable phrases was "walk, don't run, toward conflict." It seems counterintuitive, but the wisdom here is that there are often multiple sides to a story, so you may need more time to gather information and perspectives before reacting, and also, if you are not calm, informed, and ready to be fully present, you could make matters worse. ~Sunny
