Green because its the same process as spellcheck and for example, Grammarly does the same and many spellcheckers uses AI as well.

AI is doing the mundane, long, boring work but the student is doing the thinking.

The student is open and honest about their use of AI.

What about finding counter-arguments? It can help the student learn how to find other perspectives, but if the student uses it too much, they will become reliant and not learn.

It is helpful to distinguish the difference between spell-checkers and AI, but we think this is acceptable for students to do. We believe this because it preserves the student's original ideas while refining their communication.

What if an EAL student would like to use this strategy who knows what they want to say but doesn't know how to spell the words or communicate it?

What if the students wants to use AI as a tool to learn how to use grammar better?

However, it is worth considering why students feel the need to do this. Is it possibly because there is a lack of teaching grammar, spelling, or refined vocabulary in actual classrooms?

Green: provided by the school; this is basically the equivalent to a tutor

Yellow: if it is a planner, it is green, but if it provides points and evidence, it is telling you what to say and you do not do the thinking. Again, the first part of green, the latter parts are yellow.

Best use: do not always go to AI first. Try tackling the texts yourself first, then use AI if you do not understand something or do not understand fully. Also, beware AI may misinterpret, oversimplify or miss something.

Using AI to generate ideas is OK because you are still making the art. The AI usually gives very general ideas as such when you ask it for inspiration it will only tell you "make a waterfall," But most of the development such as how it looks like and what color it is is still your work.

Furthermore, its ok to take inspiration because no idea is truly yours everyone always gets inspired by others and its impossible to create anything without any inspiration

Some feel that generating the RQ with AI is the thinking work and not ok at all. Others feel it is a great use of AI to help you come up with ideas.

So nothing definitive here.

One piece of advice is to use AI to summarize, but then to go back and read the article so you better understand it AND so you pick up on the things AI misses - because AI misses stuff.

It can help with a language barrier, or you can use it to help with a science/math text if you don't understand.

In both scenarios, you should go back to the original passage and try to see what each part means.

Another point would be, most papers require or at least advise you to include direct quotes from the articles, thus making it unclear if a summary is okay. If they used the summaries simply to comprehend the general direction of the text along with some key information points, and then pulled direct quotes to validate their points, then it may be excused.

Red - Too much AI use in each step - the problem is with the way the student is using it. Try to summarize yourself, then use AI to analyze your summary to determine if you are correct or not.

using AI to provide sources is comparable to researching by yourself, only with increased speed and perhaps filtering out articles that are irrelevant to your topic. This could, however, prevent the student from uncovering an article that may contain a particularly interesting viewpoint.

As long as they write their own points with regard to the AI (avoiding using direct artificial quotes, etc) I believe that it is absolutely alright to use it to research points.

Overall, the statement leans towards being mostly true, as we think that it will help with understanding and learning, but it's important that the whole text is still read to avoid misunderstanding. We would use AI as a tool, however to not submit work.

YELLOW: This really depends on the subject and learning goals.

RED: You shouldn't use AI to make a research question - this should be done by a student.

it could be okay, by giving the student a personalised list of things to read and write. Possibly, it could aid the student in their understanding and knowledge of their topic, and asking and understanding relevant questions could further their observations from materials, helping them write an essay or complete a project– or whatever the assignment appears to be.

This could, however, barricade the student from being able to connect personalised views into their understanding of the texts. For example, getting a friend or a teacher recommend texts to you based on what they know you like or find relatively easier to read would be more beneficial to you and your understanding of the subject rather than just being assigned by a bot who does not know you outside of schoolwork, stress, as well as assignment struggles.

Another positive outcome from having your peers or mentors recommend articles, books & various media is that they know the things you specifically don't like, or are triggered by. This could save time and make learning these subjects easier for you in the long run.

We had some disagreements since some of us thought differently. However, we decided that it depends on what type of prompt you give the AI to brainstorm your ideas. It shows that you don't understand the topic. You would also need to cite the AI (depending on the AI used), which shows that it is less credible.

The research question part, however, is definitely not acceptable. Teachers stress this as an important skill for critical thinking and consideration of information.

Red - Creating a list of research questions is not ok, as it removes the ability for the student to think of them by themselves.

However the reaserch question part is a bit more complicated. Because it is using AI to partially write it for them

Part 2- Dark yellow: The student lacks the effort to come up with their own ideas. Sometimes assignments directly assess the guiding question, meaning that in this case, the student had AI do it for them.

YELLOW: For subjects like I&S, this might not be OK if actually finding and collecting sources is part of the learning. This is a skill that should be developed.

Green and yellow, because it isn't using any of the AI-generated content directly, but in real life situations where these skills matter, they might not develop properly as the students overrelies on AI. Also, in those real life situations, AI might not be available.

We believe a generated tutor is not the same as having a real tutor (human) and there's a risk of losing skills like communication and social skills.
