Egyptian farmers used a hoe to break up large clods of earth churned up by the plow. They also used hoes when tending growing crops. Examples of this ancient Egyptian tool discovered during archaeological excavations show that it was typically a wooden handle and blade bound together with rope. The wood was glazed and then honed to create sharp edges.

When you look at the country of Egypt, you see large areas of dry hot desert. The Egyptians did have one thing going for them: The River Nile. Each year, the river would flood, covering areas with rich thick silt and mud. This was necessary for them because it brought fertilizers to the land. The Nile water was used for the water needed for farmlands, and this meant that the ancient Egyptians had a lot of food to grow and eat.

Early in Egyptian history, the people made huts for their houses out of mud and papyrus reeds (a local plant). Since the Nile River would flood every year, it would wash away the mud huts.  They decided to start using the mud to create bricks, which were stronger than just plain mud. The bricks were created by mixing up mud with straw, placed in a form and then they left them in the sun to bake and dry. They also learned to build the homes so that it allowed the outside wind to keep the houses cool.
