A music video is a short film integrated with a song. It is used for 3 main reasons:
A) To make the song more memorable for an audience by attaching a visual to it.
B) To help the viewer better understand the song e.g. use the content to portray the theme of the song.
C) To display the skills of the artists, like singing, dancing, and even acting. Sometimes physical appearance of an artist is used to appeal to an audience.

All in all, music videos are a marketing tool.

The first ever music video, created in 1932

This is one of the first music videos I remember watching. I think it's very effective because it's so outlandish and randomly composed that I haven't forgotten it since - Josh Klinghoffer harmonising from inside a bin and Anthony Keidis singing in a dress made of duct tape aren't things that leave your mind easily. When you listen to the song's lyrics, they don't seem to follow one theme or piece of imagery, and the music video aheres to this - it has no real coherency or plot, just an eclectic sequence of actions performed by the band members. In a way, this helps you to understand the song and its message... or lack thereof. Despite this, it does showcase the band's capabilities, featuring them playing their instruments and/or singing respectively. It easily performs all three possible functions of a music video. On top of this, the nature of the video reflects the band's attitude to life and even music (well, since By The Way, at least): they don't take themselves too seriously, and that's fun to watch.

In terms of student videos, I think this particular video was very effective. The mise-en-scene particularly stood out to me, as they chose particularly bright and striking locations such as locations with neon signs (God's Own Junkyard?) and graffiti (Southbank?). The outfit of the lip-syncing person was suitable for the genre, and I especially liked how they thought out every detail like makeup (lipstick) and jewellery (earrings). The editing was careful and original, as cuts appeared in time with the beat in the beginnin, and there were a few selective transitions that fit with the tempo of the music. The lip-syncing itself was accurate, and the performance of the student reflecting the calm tone of the song. Furthermore, the camerawork was very well done - there were a variety of shot types and framing was precise; there was effective use of camera movement, like the handheld shots establishing location in the beginning of the video. Overall, this video was very well thought out and evidently executed with a lot of time and care.
