Many of the people were guilty until they were proven innocent, and there weren't many ways to have hard evidence that they were not a witch or that they were. Many of these people that were accused had no way of defending them selfs because it was either they said they were a witch, ( making the townspeople even more paranoid) or they were killed.   These images on the right depict the puritans and the witch trials.
