I really hope it is possible to guarantee all four freedoms for Americans and for humanity as a whole, but at this point in the world's history, even without the pandemic, I think it might be a while. It would take a lot of effort, and a lot of that effort would have to be pointed outward, towards helping other people in other cities, states, or countries. I hope that someday, we will all have freedom of worship and freedom of speech and the freedom from want and from fear, but many people will have to change before that happens. Some people are too focused on creating conflict, or just are focused on not helping resolve said conflict.
If I had to choose, I think I would choose to guarantee every human being the freedom from fear. Fear is a horrible thing, a plague. And it is universal. At one point in our lives, we have all experienced fear in some form. It is uncontrollable. If I could cure the world of fear, I would do it without a second thought, because I have often been afraid, scared, or terrified about many different things, and I know how much it hurts. I don't want others to have to experience that pain.
This is difficult though, because I hate the thought of people suffering in poverty or hunger or war, but I would still choose to free the world from fear instead of want. My reasons behind this are that fear is uncontrollable. There is, most often, nothing you can personally do to rid yourself of fear. Want, however, can be controlled. You can work towards a better situation, and I feel like we are making a bit of progress in this regard. There are things people can do to make sure their wants are satisfied. It may be difficult, and it may take a bit of extra time and effort, but people can progress.
However, I do have to note that it is not very realistic to say we could rid the world of fear. There are physical things that cause fear that we can get rid of, yes, that is true, but there are also other factors. Mental illnesses and things like that can cause great fear, and there is not really anything you can do to cure that. People try, with medicines and therapy and other treatments, but the mind is a strange thing. It creates fears out of nothing, and sometimes they do not go away. These fears may not be reasonable, but as said earlier, you have absolutely no control over the things your mind creates. And there are many different kinds of fears, so many things I am not even sure we could count them all. Is there any possible way we could cure the world of all of that?
(Sorry, slight tangent there.)
However unrealistic it is, however, I still hold onto the hope that someday, there will be a little girl who does not have to be afraid of the many different, sometimes unreasonable but still terrifying, things as I am. Someday, I hope there will be a little girl who is confident and happy and loved. A girl who is whole. A girl who is not afraid to stand up for what she knows is right, a girl who does not have to be afraid of such a simple thing like talking to people. Someday, I hope there is a little girl who does not have to be afraid of having a panic attack at school, a girl who does not have to debate if she is completely sane or not.
Someday, there will be a little girl who is free from fear.
