The Home Army had commissioned reporters and cameramen to record the conflict during August 1944. It is this footage that has now been colourised and assembled to retell the story of the uprising.

In 1939 the Russian authorities arrested her father and she and her mother, Halina, fled to Warsaw. There they joined the fledgling Polish resistance. ‘Warsaw is the source of all our misfortunes’, Hans Frank, the Governor General of the German-occupied Polish territories, wrote. ‘The place from which discontent is spread through the whole country.’ By early 1940 Frank was running a terror campaign aimed at subduing the population through fear of arrest, torture, transportation or execution.

The polish had an invasion in their land in the beginning of the war. Hanna Koscia was just 16 when she was in an army first aid team in the center of Warsaw. Her role was being a nurse and fetching supplies for the injured. It was a very dangerous job. On one occasion her life was saved when she was carrying a wounded soldier and the full force of fire was directed at them. The soldier died an hour later but Hanna survived. Hanna was almost killed multiple times. She eventually was detained in a Germany camp. She was liberated by Polish soldiers in May 1945. There is many other women involved in being nurses risking their lives just like Hanna did too.
