we performed a task where we had to listen to multiple music pieces and draw a continuous line, depending on what colour, shape and size it represented. During this exercise, we sat in smaller groups and were given a minute of each type of music. It was interesting to be able to see across the table how different all of our lines were. My interpretation of a sound presented itself as swirls, and then someone else came as zig zags. It was relaxing to colour in the page to the sound of music, mimicking musical frequencies on the page and what they presented themselves as a visual. This is an activity that I can see applying well to social care settings it doesn't really have a right way to do it, and also removes the pressure of drawing something perfect. During this exercise, having a large variety of colours would encourage someone to pick up different colours, or to explore different mark makings of the individual utensils. This is an easy-to-follow exercise which provides visual stimulation and auditory stimulation from the music. Listening to music and colouring has been proven to have great therapeutic effects.

I have done my second year of social care placement in a day centre for adults with disabilities. During my hours there, I was allowed to assist the workers with workshops and eventually run my own. This is one of the ones that I took the initiative to start on my own. Someone donated large quantities of beads and crystals after their jewellery-making business closed down. I took this picture of the table where some service users and I decided to make necklaces. I helped the service users choose the type of base they wanted for their necklaces, and then what type of beads and decorations could go on them. Due to the service users, I was working with having some difficulties with hand-eye coordination, we opted for larger and easier-to-grab pieces for the most part. It was an enjoyable activity and the service users were keen to continue making more necklaces, enjoying the sensory feeling of stringing the beads along and letting the bright-coloured patterns build on them.

Another workshop that I supervised was a music one. in this day centre, everyone's ability to play music was different, depending on their physical or mental disability. some service users were only able to keep the rhythm of a drum because using a string instrument was too challenging. The bells were something that everyone could use. instead of using sheet music, the notes were colour coded as circles that matched the colours of different bells. This helped the service users to stay on track with the song.

It eventually came together as a variety of different flowers which we put together onto the branches. creating a cherry blossom tree.

we did an outdoor installation together by using leaves, stones and other materials that we found laying about. as a group we seemed to naturally gravitate towards swirls that in a way looked like the Japanese stone gardens. This was a fun activity to do because the ground was a bit slippy and we skidded around the place collecting brightly coloured leaves and flowers to add to the piece. After the piece was completed we put back the rocks and through the leaves into the air. It was very enjoyable as Thursdays are one of the longer days with a lot of double classes. Being able to walk around instead of having the same white walls to look at was much needed. When it was all over we gathered the leaves and through them into the air a few times.

One of our classmates experienced a tragedy on this day and therefore presentations were cancelled. we instead went out and tried to create a mural or sculpture in our groups for her. my group decided to show she has our love and support by putting together a pink love heart using a variety of flowers growing on campus, and making the outline in rock and leaf. it was slightly tricky to put together as it was breezy on that day and it took multiple attempts to take a nice picture of it. This exercise gave us a lot of creative freedom while also limiting us to the objects in our environment. a project as such would be appropriate for social care as it would encourage the client to be outside in the fresh air and take a moment to consider the secondary uses for the things around them. this would be an exercise that doesn't cost any resources

we watched a video on a day service for people with mental disabilities putting together a art exhibition of different blank canvas shoes that they have painted

These shows represented the different things that were important in life to the artist or represented their life journey. It was interesting to see what made them choose the different colours, writings and images to paint on them. I found the concept very interesting from a psychological point of view because the process of the show painting exhibited the choices of colour association. as an example, someone who sees themselves as a happy-go-lucky might represent themselves with a brighter yellow colour, or someone who might struggle with mental health might opt for darker colours. as a social care worker, this could help identify how a service user might view themselves or their life at that moment. I found the exercise of painting images of shoes in class very insightful on a variety of different levels even with the people in my course, observing what colours they choose or what designs they choose. i could even identify some dynamics, as some people painted independently, and some looked to one person to see what they were doing and would adopt that person's ideas. it was also interesting to see who painted the background first, focusing on the journey as a whole, and who started with the shoe, focusing on themselves.
I'm not sure what the meaning was behind the shoes I painted as I simply choose a pallet of colours that appealed to me and kept going with it until I was finished. I do not have a picture of the finished product as I left them drying on the window and someone took them. from what I remember one of the shoes was a black and white to represent the good and the bad times that came along in my life, with red fingerprints all over it, to represent key turning points in my life that affected me in my development. I remember I focused more on the background, with different warm and cool tones opposite each other. I think the interpretation could have been that I believe in the balance of both good and bad in life and the scale will shift continuously as life adds weight to one side or the other, but what's important is which side you yourself are putting the weights on. you cannot control what comes your way but you can make the best of it by staying positive.

We did an exercise where we used shadows as guidelines to paint on large paper posters hung up on the wall. at first, it was random shapers as we held various items in front of the projector, and then we started experimenting with different shapes and outlines. we tried to create unique patterns by using different brush strokes and splatters. overall it was interesting to keep layering the page until it was entirely covered in colours. It was a lot easier to paint on a large scale and left a lot more room for creativity. Personnaly my favourite part was drawing out the shadow outline of people and then using a patting of the paintbrush to create aura like patterns around them.
