Library employees give the book a barcode and number, a spine label (either the authors name or the appropriate dewey decimal number) and is added into the library's online catalog with information about the book itself. If the book is a replacement or is older, it is shelved appropriately among the rest of the open stacks. The book is found or requested, and checked out by customers and employees alike. If the book is new or popular, it may have a different check out allotment. It all depends on the book! After the book is checked out, it is labeled as so and updated in the library catalog. The book is then inspected for any damage by library staff, and checked in. If the book is damaged, it is labeled as so and is sent for repair. If the book is heavily damaged, it is considered missing, will not be checked in, and the customer may have to pay for a new copy of the item. It may be  deteriorating, and is no longer active in circulation.  The book may retire to storage. Some libraries even donate their used books to library programs or those in need.
