Constructivism in Health

Constructivism can be used in health in so many great ways. Since health is such an integrative part of everyone's life, it can be taught in more personal ways. Constructivism revolves around learning from your experiences. Health in general is all about learning from your mistakes or someone else's mistakes and doing a better job the next time. That in itself shows you how much constructivism is related to health. If students are exposed to constructivist learning in a health classroom, they will become more connected to the knowledge they obtain and will be better prepared and more likely to use that knowledge throughout their life to become an overall healthier person. This, of course, is one of the reasons I want to be a health teacher in the first place.

Project-based learning means that the students are learning about the topic as they are completing some kind of rigorous or extended task. They don't learn the information first! They learn it as they ask questions, find resources, and applications.

Implementation in Health:
- Analyze the packaging on food to determine and learn about the misconceptions the media creates through advertising.
- Sleep advocacy project so students can dive into and learn why sleep is so important at their age. It will also give them a chance to see what things keep them from sleep so they can possibly make changes in their lives.

Problem-based learning is done using an open ended problem that means something to the students. These issues/problems can be brought to their attention through photographs, videos, scenarios, articles, etc. After they've seen the problem, they join a group and collaborate and brainstorm different ways they can combat the problem. There is NOT one right answer to problem-based activities!

Implementation in Health:
- Show a video or read an article about the flu in schools and pose the question, How might we limit cold and flu transmission among students?
- Show a video about hunger and food waste and pose the question, How can we limit food waste in the school cafeteria or in our homes?

Inquiry-based learning is kind of a mix of problem-based learning and project-based learning. Students are introduced to a topic, questions are posed, the student makes predictions about the questions, and then they research. After they have gained the knowledge they need, the student will draw a conclusion based on the questions and then discuss and share them.

Implementation in Health:
- Students use the knowledge they have, critical thinking skills, self-awareness, and any other resources to inquire about a healthy eating plan. Questions that you could ask are: How does eating healthy contribute to a person's overall wellbeing? What factors influence what I choose to eat during the day? What do I need to consider when making a healthy eating plan for myself?

Authentic activities are activities that give students a chance to experience/practice a real-world situation in a safe learning environment. These kinds of activities can teach a lot of applicable skills that students may use in the future.

Implementation in Health:
- Students can learn to analyze nutrition labels and then put it into action in a week long nutrition log. They can also try and create meals that contain a certain amount of calories or try and stay under 2000 calories in a day.
- After learning about good communication skills, students can participate in different scenarios where they have to decide on how to respond correctly.

Start in jigsaw groups, each person gets their assigned part of the lesson, each student becomes an expert on their part, get in expert groups to discuss any questions, go back to jigsaw group and teach the group about your expert topic.

Implementation in Health:
- Each expert group could be learning about different drugs, diseases, mental illnesses, STIs, etc. and then come back to their jigsaw groups to teach everyone what they learned.

You take the objectives you are learning in the class and have the students participate in some kind of service that allows them to learn more about the topic or create deeper meaning and connections.

Implementation in Health
- After learning about organ donation and having a guest speaker come in and talk to the students about this and blood donation the students will take some time to volunteer at the next blood drive as well as create some pre-blood drive advertisements to get more people to donate.
- After learning about different diseases (Alzheimer's, cancer, AIDS, depression, etc.) the students could help plan and carry out a school wide dance to raise funds to donate to one of those diseases foundations.
