Online predators will try to appear trustworthy, and pretend to share similar interests with the target. They attempt to engage in as many activities with the child as possible, and often look for children who are vulnerable when doing this. They disguise their identity and showcase themselves as someone they are not. Eventually, they become more provocative when the child begins to trust them.

Why are Online Predators Hard to Identify?

Online predators are hard to identify because they seem like completely normal people with their presence. Many predators actually have substantial jobs and a stable living situation, which is much different than the average person would think. The typical online predator is a middle-aged white male, however, online predators can be any age, race, or gender.

With the outbreak of Covid, kids all over the world had little to do to entertain themselves. This led to children swarming video games online and a burst in social media use. As a result, online predators followed where children wandered on the web. With more kids to target, online predation numbers have drastically increased.

Online predators use the grooming process, which also ties into how sex traffickers get what they want. They attract minors in the same way, either by fake profiles, taking advantage of vulnerability, and many other possibilities. Traffickers coerce targets for explicit material just like predators, and try to establish trust similarly as well.

Sextortion, What is It and What are the Outcomes?

Sextortion is when an online predator forces someone to send an illicit video or image to them. They then try to expose and blackmail the target if they do not pay or do what they ask. In previous cases, a boy who did not tell his parents about this happening to him had his problem escalate and worsen. On the other hand, a girl who reported the problem to her parents ended up avoiding any major consequences.

When children are being groomed, they will increase their amount of time online. They may get secretive about their activity online and switch tabs quickly when a parent comes close. Another sign is that the child uses explicit language they would not normally use or know of, and they additionally become volatile with their emotions.
