As with all districts, we have to have something to pass on to new teachers in our subject area. My question is: I have a bare-bones curriculum but how do I put what I do in a module? Even though I teach the basic outline of my curriculum, it isn't always the same way or timing as the year before. This way I can be flexible in the ways my learners need. So, how do I have a static curriculum to pass on?

Laurie G. - My current level of understanding with Curriculum and Content development is probably an 8 out of 10. I get the concepts, how to put them together, how to assess and manipulate it for learners but am unsure how to put all of the pieces together for someone to follow. I am also not great about creating a full lesson plan.

I have been in the classroom for so long I am able to see many connections to curriculum and great lessons. I love to find technology resources to bridge curriculum and lesson planning. Students love to connect technology to learning and I feel that if really enhances their understanding and retention. I feel after so many years creating lessons comes very natural to me.

The main question I have regarding curriculum content is how can districts collaborate more with instructional staff to gain their input when creating the curriculum? In my district for example our school curriculum is developed by a chief academic officer, and his/her team. Why aren't the people who deliver the instruction more involved in this process? I believe teachers have the best tools to formulate the curriculum and instruction for students, because of the data that is collected, and daily student interactions.

My understanding of curriculum and content development is right in the middle. I have a wonderful, yet overwhelming, opportunity to create an entire K-12 curriculum for music at my district, since I am the only music teacher. I have complete power to make all curricular decisions, but become overwhelmed with how many different options there are. I have been working on the curriculum for 6 years and feel that I just now have an idea of how to start planning out learning goals for each grade level. With so many schedule changes year to year, however, I find it difficult, and almost impossible, to teach the same curriculum each year. Each year, I revisit my curriculum and make major changes.

Am I working with students in a pull-out setting for remedial work or am I just in resource all day? I have read a lot of PD books on currciculum including UDL but I haven't had much of a change to implement my knowledge with an every changing role depending on staffing. However, I am always willing to learn, read more to improve and just gain further knowledge in an every changing educational world.
I feel confident with formally and summatively assessing my students but sometimes the objectives and parts of the lesson plan itself will be weak due to so many different levels in each group.

The key concepts that I am gaining from this class is that Planning is neccessary and that we have tools, websites and examples to learn from. We also have to prioritize the sea of information that is deemed neccessary to implement and teach to our students. We all see this in different ways and have our own teaching style. How do we organize the curriculum needed to teach with lessons the how that will teach our students in the most efficient way? That is why the planning is neccesary. I know that I can take a lesson that I thought that I could teach it well and get into it and realize that it doesn't fit my style of teaching then it becomes a how do I change it to work for my class.

So I have to define the skills neccesary to have before they can learn a new concept. Where it becomes messy for me is the tool to use to teach the concept.

I am attending a NMSI conference this Summer and they will allow us to use all their lesson plans. I like this resource because at the conference we are the student and then we will also teach a lesson. It is all project based in your content area. Each lesson is flexible, you can start as low and basic level and then the questions increase in hardness as the student is comfortable. They have the Standards and are in lesson format with every thing you need. The materials needed, worksheet, answer key, intended skill to teach, flexible so the teacher can take make changes to the lesson as needed.
I also use Youcubed.com alot they ahave a lot of Math interactive activities where it is exploritory giving the student time to think and play with math. I have used these activities to break the mindset that math is hard and I can't do it.
Another thnig that I have learned when trying something new or different in my class. We have to teach the rules and how's it is done. It's like a learning new game you have to learn the rules first and the first couple times of playing is hard but eventually we get it. Same with students changing the way they learn they have to know the rules and expectations but allow for mistakes.

I enjoyed reading the articles in this and other sections of the toolkit. Here are some areas that interest me, and some resources and ideas that come to mind:

Universal Design- I first learned about universal design for learning (UDL) in my class Enhancing Learning for All Students. At that time, I understood UDL from the perspective of setting up zones in the classroom for various activities and functions. Now, I am reminded that there are also many considerations for adaptive equipment and multiple means of engagement, action, and expression. Here is a link to the concept map I created on Universal Design: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:VA6C2:e2e817a9-0b6e-4703-9387-6cdb5a4ece55

Effective Teaching Strategies- This enlightened me on a multitude of teaching strategies, notably: various ways to create a flipped classroom and how to apply inquiry-based learning. I think inquiry is a great way to drive curiosity and to invite students to participate.

Student-Led Learning- Finally, I enjoyed viewing the video with examples of student-led learning in an ELA classroom. I teach an online class with advanced learners, so I would like to apply some of these engagement strategies to help students collaborate. Asking students to use metacognition is a great way for them to stay engaged while practicing reading comprehension, and I expect that it will bring new ideas into our discussions of texts.

Thank you for providing this toolkit: it is a wealth of information that I am sure to reference quite frequently moving forward!

This is Ty Miller. The toolkit provided is an excellent resource. By itself, it is very valuable but then there are the many links to even more resources. I was able to find 2 items that I will be using for sure. Also, many resources are bookmarked for investigation later.
