Costuming for Stranger Things Cast (Kids and Teens)

With costume, I did some research behind the 80s fashion by focussing more on what high school students would wear to school back in 1980s, after finding a few photos and inspiration from the Stranger Things series itself, denim was a popular choice of clothing for both bottoms and jackets as well as windbreaker jackets and striped shirts. Girl's would also pair a striped shirt with high waisted jeans and a belt that contrasted the colour of the shirt. As for more on Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas' fashion, they wear similar clothing but since they are more on a 'nerd' side I took into consideration the clothing they wore in Season 1.

I took inspiration from season 4 for Nancy’s costume, where she wears a blue and pink smart outfit. As for Jonathan’s outfit choice, we found a denim jacket that was similar to the jacket Jonathan wore in Season 1.

DND (Dungeon and Dragons) Scene

This is inspiration from the original scene of Stranger Things of the kids playing Dungeons and Dragons in the basement around the table. The basement is an open roon but with this scene, very minimal lighting highlights the Dungeons and Dragons game night the kids have.

Laboratory Scene

With the Lab scene, I watched back to the episodes that include laboratory scenes, (Russian Base, Nina Project, Hawkins Nation Laboratory etc.) and they all share very similar atmospheres where it's very dim lighting, machinery and experiment objects.

Hair Salon Scene

For the Salon Scene, with the Set Design/ Props team, we wanted the hair salon to contrast the dark ambience of other scenes within the performance, to also emphasise the retro aesthetic of the 80s as the 80s it well known for their neon and bright colours when it comes to clothing and places.

Disco Music

For the Disco scene, we wanted to revisit the music that they use in the original Hawkins Snow Ball, which was 'The Police - Every Breath You Take' to set the mood of the snow ball. We then also switch to a different song, 'Dead Or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)' to heighten the retro theme and atmosphere of a school disco.

Hair Salon Music

Character Research: Suzie Bingham

Suzie is a minor character in the Stranger Things series and is well known to be Dustin Henderson's girlfriend. She was raised in a strict Mormon household, but while also devoted to her faith, she also developed more nerdy interests, such as science, technology, and reading fantasy novels. Due to her religious family and appearance, she is sheltered and quiet. There's also some hints of jealousy to Suzie, as when she hears Erica murmur to Dustin to 'get the number already' (Season 3 Episode 8), Suzie suspiciously asks who that was, but Dustin lies by saying it was someone overlapping the frequency.

Suzie Bingham and Dustin Henderson first met at Camp Know Where in June of 1985. They bonded over their shared love for comics and science, which eventually led to them dating. Suzie's hometown is in Salt Lake City, Utah so this provides information about her long distance relationship with Dustin.

This was our logo choice for our theatre company. The words real and fake reflecting each other highlight theme of fantasy and horror and how Stranger Things study the exploration of the things that make us human and differentiate us from the forces of evil. We took inspiration from the original Stranger Things logo with the colour scheme and font as the colour pops out more to the audience and the font gives eerie look.

Dungeons and Dragons

For the early weeks of rehearsal, since I was quite new to knowing the cast, one of my first priorities was building a relationship with my peers in order to make the friendship between: Mike, Will, Lucas, Dustin and Max believable to the audience that we are a close friend group. To help build a relationship with my ensemble, we played games to match the energy of the Dungeons and Dragons scene we had to perform and create. This helped me greatly as it gradually made me become more comfortable, which is what we need as part of this collaborative process.

At the start of the process, I did research on Suzie’s character to become more familiar of her lifestyle and her backstory with Dustin. I also watched episodes where she appears to pick up upon the way she speaks, her physicality and personality. In the Stranger Things series, Suzie and Dustin share a song which reveals Suzie’s soft and bubbly nature which is what I wanted to concentrate on for my character development.

I started off by picking up on the way she speaks, since she is a young teen she still has quite a high pitched voice also taking into consideration of her American accent with knowing how to pronounce my vowels making sure it sounded natural.

Dr Brenner, Dr Alexei and Eleven

For Dr Brenner and Alexei, since they work in the Laboratory, they have very formal attire and lab coats as they concentrate on the experimentation of Eleven.

For Eleven, her first appearance is when she is in the lab being tested by Dr Brenner and she wears a hospital patient gown, so we decided to keep Eleven in that specific costume.

The Upside Down

The Forest

The School

The Laboratory

There is very dim lights.
Whenever something eerie happens the lights flicker.
The laboratory is very dull colours.
Very ominous lighting.
Slow pace to emphasise the tension within the laboratory where the source of the upside down comes from.
Every time there is an upcoming moment that involves with the upside down/ demogorgans, the lights flicker as the lights are a main source of connection between the upside down and reality.

The Streets of Hawkins

Costume For Suzie

For Suzie’s attire, her clothing consists of very frilly dresses and smart tops. Her first appearance, she wears a floral night gown with frilly accents, and in her appearance for Season 4, she still has that smart attire as well as matching plaid print.
