The Ordinary World is the normal world for the Hero.

Before Odysseus had gone to fight in the Trojan War, he lived in the Ordinary World of his hometown, Ithaca. As stated from the excerpt of Sailing From Troy, "My home is on the peaked sea-mark of Ithaca... A rocky isle, but good for a boy's training." The paragraph shares that while he felt comfortable in his hometown, his "training" was highlighted, showing his want to go out of the Ordinary World to fight.

The hero is presented with a problem, challenge, or adventure.

The Trojan War has ended and Odysseus is starting his journey home. As presented in the opening prologue, "He plundered the stronghold on the proud height of Troy... weathered many bitter nights and days in his deep heart at sea, while he fought only to save his life, to bring his shipmates home." This states that since the Trojan War came to an end, Odysseus sought to return home with his shipmates. This creates the adventure and challenges he must overcome.

Passes The First Threshold

The hero is facing the fear of the unknown and balks at the threshold of adventure.

The first challenge that Odysseus faces is the Lotus-Eaters, this is one of the many obstacles he faces. Odysseus and his men land on the the coastline of the Lotus-Eaters because of high winds. The people on this coastline live off of the Lotus flower, and once you eat it you want stay forever. In the passage of the Lotus Eaters Odysseus says, "no one taste the Lotus, or you lose your hope of home." The Lotus flower is like a drug and it is addicting to them. The 2 men Odysseus sent to check out the coastline never came back because they ate this flower. He had to drag them back to the ship and tie them down so they stay. This shows that he has overcome the first threshold by going into the unknown, getting his men back, and making sure they get home as well.

Tests, Allies, and Enemies

The hero is forced to make allies and enemies in the special world, and to pass certain tests and challenges.

Odysseus had fought many enemies and had gone through many tests throughout his quest to reach his family. One of the very first obstacles that Odysseus came across is The Land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and his crew had gone to a certain Cyclops in hopes to find food and necessary items to continue on their quest. As they had asked the Cyclops for food he had no cares for their problems, instead he had eaten the men instead. In order to stop the loss of men occurring, he had tricked the cyclops by giving himself the name 'Nohbdy', and further enraged the cyclops more by taking out its eye. Although this had helped Odysseus and his remaining ship mates escape from the cyclops, this had also caused Odysseus to gain one more enemy. This can be shown through the use of lines 478-491, "Should destiny intend that he shall see his roof again among his family in his father land, far be that day, and dark years between,". This piece of text displays the cyclops praying to his father, cursing the rest of Odysseus' quest. Not only does this piece of text show how Odysseus had gained an enemy, but it can also displays how Odysseus was tested and overcame this test in order to be released from the captivity of the cyclops.

This is the moment at which the hero touches bottom. He faces the possibility of death, brought to the brink in a fight with a mythical beast.

Odysseus is held captive by Calypso for 7 years. During these years Odysseus was at his worst moment, crying and wishing to leave. As stated in Book 5: Calypso, the Sweet Nymph lines 41-54, "Odysseus in his stone seat to seaward-tear on tear brimming in his eyes. The sweet days of his life time were running out in anguish over his exile, for long ago the nymph had ceased to please... he sat on the rocky shore and broke his own heart groaning, with eyes wet scanning the bare horizon of the sea." As repeated throughout the text, Odysseus is depressed, his "heart groaning".

The hero emerges from the special world, transformed by his experience.

Odysseus, after enduring countless challenges, returns home to reunite with his family. Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar, eventually lowering the disguise. Athena also made him look more youthful and changed his appearance after years of fighting and sailing. "She tipped her golden wand upon the man, making his cloak pure white, and the knit tunic fresh around him. Lithe and young she made him, ruddy with sun, his jawline clean, the beard no longer gray upon his chin." When he is transformed, he is mistaken for a god. His son says, "you are one of the gods who rule the sweep of heaven!"

The hero comes back to his ordinary world, but nothing is the same as it was before.

Odysseus finishes his journey to Ithaca, only to encounter the suitors in his home. Odysseus plans to kill the suitors with the help of his son and fully reunite with both his wife and son. As stated in the prologue, "Numerous suitors, believing Odysseus to be dead, have been continually seeking the hand of his wife, Penelope, in marriage, while overrunning Odysseus' palace and enjoying themselves at Penelope's expense. Moreover, they are plotting to murder Odysseus' son, Telemachus, before he can inherit his father's lands." This shows the drastic changes in his homeland. Despite these changes, Odysseus eventually reunited with Penelope and Telemachus, the suitors killed.
