According to the article, Written Language, “Before cuneiform, people used tokens the way we use receipts today. For example, two people trading ten sheep for ten bags of grain would each also take home a cloth bag containing ten stones. This served as a record of their trade.”

The evidence suggests that writing allowed people in Mesopotamia to more accurately and more efficiently create records. Before the written language, cuneiform, was created, records of sales were inconsistent and people would receive a token to represent the transaction. This was most likely difficult to keep track of, highly disorganized, and not standardized across Mesopotamia. Therefore, the development of written language would have streamlined not only trade but all aspects of life.

Another piece of evidence from the article Written Language states, “Overall, cuneiform is considered the most important cultural contribution to have come out of Mesopotamia. It led to the birth of the written story. Mesopotamian literature later informed and influenced the writings of other cultures, including ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome”

This shows that the development of a written language had far reaching impacts not only on Mesopotamia but also future cultures. Written language is highly influential and important because it allowed for civilization to become more complex and advanced. For the first time, laws were written down, stories that were once part of a rich oral tradition were recorded in writing and spread far and wide. This marked the beginning of recorded history.
