What is police violence?

Currently in the U.S police violence is a big issue for black people. Police brutality is bad because police are hurting and/or killing innocent people, specifically African Americans for no reason. Two examples of police brutality are choke holds and shooting unarmed people. According to Mappingviolence.org, of all of the deaths at the hands of the police officers, only 0.3 percent have been convicted. Which means that many police are getting away with police violence. This is connected to structural racism which is used to mean systems in the United States like transportation or schools which negatively impact African-Americans. The police force is one example of these systems.

My name is Yunek Moore and I am an African American girl from Illinois. First, I attended a high school graduation party and was confronted by 3 police officers. Second, They took me to jail and I got hurt in the process. Lastly, I got cuts and my right knee was swollen. I needed 3 surgeries, steroid injections and physical therapy. The officers said they entered the party out of concern for the safety of those at the party. Now, I'm fearful of the police because I do not want this to happen again.

History of police violence

Police violence has many causes and can have effects on black people. There is a long history in America’s police of racism. Charleston, South Carolina's 1st public police force in the 1700s was made to control black slaves. The white slave owners in South Carolina were worried about a slave revolt so they made the police to prevent it. After slavery the police were controlling segregation from 1865. Segregation is when African Americans went to a different school and whites went to a different school. They had to do everything separately and the police were in charge. Even though segregation ended, racism and police violence is still a problem and effects African Americans. For an example, George Floyd was killed by police because someone accused him of using fake money. George Floyd was unarmed but still killed by police this is an example of police brutality caused by racism. According to Mapping Police Violence.Org black people are 3 times more likely to be killed by police even though they are more likely to be unarmed. Due to the violence people of all different races came together to protest. When George Floyd was killed there were protests in every state of America. One positive effect of all of this is that as a result more people are paying attention to racism and they are working together to fix the problem.

Unfortunately, there has been a problem lately in the United States involving racism and police violence, but the good news is there are solutions.
Black people are getting killed 3 times more than hispanic or white people. Police are killing more black people in the largest cities in the US.
First to solve this problem, BLM is proposing police all need to have the same rules when approaching any person. Second, to solve the problem, the coffee with a cop program makes people feel safe around the police. Lastly, people and the police can get along better if they know who the police are and get to know them better.
