Here I am using many small, layered brush strokes and some more traditional painting techniques. I was aiming to bring out the fur texture and emphasize the natural elements of the Kangaroo Rat.

This approach does work fairly well with the monochromatic color scheme overall, but certain elements do get a bit lost in the visual noise, especially at a distance. This style could work, but does run the risk of being harder to read at a distance.

I'm using a very simple round brush here to create only a few, flat colors. I am also combining that with a heavy use of outlines. Ideally, this would improve readability while also giving the illustration a bit more whimsy.

This does work fairly well with the color scheme, but could use a few more shades to help break up the individual forms. This approach combines the shading of my first effort with the graphic nature of my second. I was looking to give the Kangaroo Rat a bit more perceived detail and natural elements without it becoming too noisy from a distance.

Overall, I think this approach gives a lot of character to the drawing. I feel that my final illustration turned out fairly well overall. The image pops off of the page the way I wanted it to and pretty accurately reflects the appearance of the Kangaroo Rat. Both the color scheme and landscape I utilized help to contribute to the image standing out from the page. If anything, I do think the animal could have had a bit brighter fur shade, but the current shade does fit in line with the stylized look of the rest of the image. The sky is a bit bright given the animal's nocturnal nature, but I think the color palette helps to enforce a sunrise or sunset setting.

Post-Critique Reflection

There's definitely more that I would have liked to have done with my final illustration, although I do think it is working well as it is. Adding some more texture and visible brushstrokes could have given it a bit more perceived detail and helped with the natural subject matter of it. I also probably could have pushed the color palette a little bit more. I think I got a little too hung up on the monochromatic nature of it and didn't include quite as much contrast as I would have liked to.
