The book, All American Boys, deals with issues of police brutality and neglect by authority to young African American men. Police brutality is a major problem that has been dividing the African American community and the police force. 6 out of 10 African American males say that they have been treated unfairly by police officers because of their race. In the book, one of the main characters, Rashad, interacts with police leading to him in a hospital bed. He did not to do anything wrong, but he was accused of trying to steal a bag of barbecue potato chips. Situations such as these happen everyday to young black men all across the country.
It happens way too often where the officer involved does not get charged while the victim is suffering. In the novel, while Rashad is laying in the hospital with internal bleeding, the police officer, Paul Galluzzo, is at home flipping burgers at a family cookout. For example Trayvon Martin was shoot by a neighborhood watch police. The officer, George Zimmerman pleaded not guilty. This book talks about real life issues that are being forgotten about as the years go by.

The authors, Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely, are trying to inform the reader about what is happening in America. The authors explain the confrontation between Rashad and the police officer through Rashad's eyes. This technique allows the reader to realize what the authors think about all of the controversies that are happening in the country. I believe that the authors are trying to convey the perspectives of African Americans and also the white community. The authors show both point of views of the American people.

From the novel I learned that all Americans are affected by issues such as the ones displayed in the story. I learned that no matter what race, background, or political views, police brutality affects them in some kind of way. Not everyone is affected the same way but as Americans we all have feel something while watching it on the news and hearing it on the radio. This book has broaden my perspective about societal issues because you experience the confrontation through the victim's eyes instead of he television screen.
