He tries his best to provide for his family yet it never seems to pay off. he may seem to be completely depressed and hopeless but he is trying, and it's that drive he has to keep trying that makes him a good person. "well- what I mean is we come from people who had  a lot of pride. I mean- we are a very proud people." This quote supports the theme of the strength of family because it explains how proud they are as a family. Before Walter said this, he was about to accept the money from Lindner, but then he realized who in a way help earn his family that house, his father, and Walter knew that his family deserves that house. In that moment he realized how proud he was to be apart of his family, he even starts to bring up how proud he is of his sister and his son before making the final decision to move in. It seems like what made him realize his pride in his family again was the support from his mother, the love from his wife, and his love for his sister and his son. This piece relates to Walter's alcoholic tendencies and illustrates how it sometimes seemed like he needed alcohol when he was feeling sad or sorry for himself. There are a few times when Walter comes home drunk in the book, and it is usually after he makes a mistake or feels guilty about something, like most alcoholics do.

"What do you do when you want to turn back? But you can't because its All just pitch black." I feel that this quote encapsulates Walter's regret he experiences in the novel. Walter would do anything to have a chance to go back on the decisions that he made in the past, like giving Willy Harris the rest of the insurance money for example. No matter how hard Walter tried, he wouldn't be able to go back on his decision that faded into black, and all he has left is his own regret.

Time and time again he'd "drink himself in circles".
He'd drink to escape his problems, then in turn run into the same problems, then try to drink those away in a never ending cycle. Eventually that cycle would stop when he learned to stop feeling so sorry for himself.
