The Manhattan Project was a research and development project in the US from 1942-1946 that worked to produce atomic weapons. It was successful in producing two types of atomic bombs, a simple gun-type fission weapon (Little Boy) and a more complex implosion-type weapon (Fat Man).

Despite the fact that the bombs were inefficient and didn't reach their full potential, they were still extremely destructive and were much more deadly than any previous weapon. Over 40,000 people were killed in Nagasaki and over 140,000 were killed in Hiroshima and many more were left with serious injuries and trauma.

While the bombs were extremely destructive and killed many civilians, I believe that President Truman made the correct decision in dropping the bombs. If Japan hadn't been forced to surrender, it is likely that an all out invasion of Japan would be necessary. This could have resulted in over 500,000 allied casualties and many more Japanese casualties.
