I found bringing in the family and having care team meetings worked the best of all the strategies used

set an extra task for some students to work on when they finished, but also tried to encourage students who had finished writing assignments to go through and edit and polish their writing and went through with them on some ways of doing it - with mixed success

Ril Groups

Often students stayed in their Ril groups for the English unit work - this was extremely productive as the students were able to be given extension tasks directly. We also found students were more accountable to their Ril teacher during English tasks when they remained in the BO rooms with them.

BO groups

Lots of small BO groups in ability levels was very productive

Most students were excited about the idea of a reward being posted to them. I did see this as an incentive for them to participate and put in some effort.

It took some of my Year 10 students a long time to start submitting work.

Greeting them with positivity every day,
encouraging them to participate in any of the tasks and activities,
assuming positive intent - if a student comes to class, they want to engage on some level
ensuring all activities had a learning purpose (e.g. word searches used vocabulary from the lesson or unit, puzzles connected with the texts), and
providing opportunities for students to present their learning and understanding in different ways
negotiating texts and products where practical and manageable

Too time consuming. We need to make this process more efficient, especially when 48 students regularly turn up

I think its important to explain to the students why RIL is so important. We had so many questions to start with. maybe even the science behind it.
