Provocation: Students will participate in a Real World Math Project

In this project, students will research populations in cities and countries around the world. They will investigate how to name the numbers and compare them (they may use calculators). Students can work collaboratively.

Using a number line (blank) students will try to rename each segment (in base 10) - Students work collaboratively.

Learning activity:(formative assessment)

Place value activity: Students will use manipulatives (100 block, 10 block, 1 block) to represent numbers.

Idea for execution of this task:

Students use white boards to write a 1-3 digit number.
They use manipulatives to represent the number.
They write the number in expanded form.

Summative assessment:

Students will make a place value chart in their math notebook naming each digits value and writing it’s expanded form up to any number they choose.

Students share their chart with the class.
