You'd intend that Melinda hates going to school but with her being so ironic she wants to go. "I am actually grateful to go back to school". (Melinda 74) This shows that Melinda may have enjoyed something at school that day whether is be a class or a new group of friends but Melinda is always Ironic you'll never know.

Mr. Freeman is an important symbol in the story too. Him and Melinda are pretty much exactly opposite which is why his name is "Free-Man" and Melinda is a metaphorical slave to her social situation. He is one of the few people that Melinda is friends with and plays a key role in the story and it's plot. "For someone who questions the values of words, he sure uses a lot of them." Mr. Freeman doesn't think words mean a lot but to Melinda words mean a lot.

Melinda's lips are as equally bad as her social life. Kids make fun of her for them and I feel bad for her because she doesn't need the hate that she receives from fellow students. Melinda has a one of a kind form of communication as ironically she wont even speak.

Melinda Communicating With Her Parents

When Melinda says she doesn't like talking a lot, her only communicating with notes to talk to her parents should back that up. This shows that Melinda really has nobody she can talk to about what happens to her, not even her family. "My family has a good system. We communicate with notes on the kitchen counter." This quote makes me think that if Melinda was closer with her parents, her parents would know about the rape.

Melinda's poster of Maya Angelou is a big symbol in the story because Melinda feels that Maya has a big impact in her life because they can relate to one big event in each of their lives. "Maya Angelou''s picture watches me while I sweep and mop the floor, while I scrub the shelves, while I chase spiders out of the corners." Melinda puts her poster taped on the mirror of the janitors closet so people won't know about her secret place.

For Melinda, Thanksgiving is always a mess and there is always an accident weather it be the turkey was burn't or anything else. Every thanksgiving Melinda and her Dad go get donuts and order a pizza because her mom fails every time and is always a mess. "My normally harried, rushed mother always turns into a strung-out retail junkie just before Turkey Day." This shows that her mother isn't calm during thanksgiving and always in a rush which messes everything up.

The frog dissection is one of the most important part because the frog is being pinned down by all fours and it symbolized melinda's raped by saying, "He pinned her froggy legs and arms down and spread her froggy legs." this shows that Melinda was having a flashback of Andy Evans aka IT then she fainted as an outcome.
