Addiction simulator visualising the protagonist slowly spiralling into addiction, showing how the use of hard drugs such as heroine, meth, etc can change the perspective lenses of a person's overview on life and the world in general as they slowly delve deeper into their habit. I want to delve into the issues around addiction through a visual storyline, showing how people who are that deep into addiction perceive the world around them and also how they are perceived and judged by others.

One thing I want to draw from this movie is the contextual inspiration, mainly from the character Clementine as she self-destructive but still manages to have a sense of self-love despite being aware of how awful she is. This makes her able to recognise that you could be an awful person but it only takes one person to see good in you. I want to use this message in my project possibly for a rehabilitation plotline towards the end? Showing that there is good in everyone, even addicts. Even if they can't recognise it themselves.

The colour filters in the film being brighter at the start before she met Evie and them being more dull and desaturated towards the end when she's the worst mentally.

Another movie I want to take both visual and contextual inspiration from. The movie's visuals are very dark and grungy with a clear run down aesthetic throughout the whole movie. On the contextual side of things, the movie shows a 13 year old girl going through active heroine addiction and all of the things that come with addiction, mainly the negatives. I want to take how the movie portrays addiction and use it to better my own understanding of how I should portray it within my own project.

Another character story I want to look into with this is Cassie as her eating disorder is portrayed in skins, and that in itself is an addiction. On the visual aspect of things, Skins has a grungy early 2000's council estate esc aesthetic which I want to borrow some things from to form my own projects overall aesthetic.

Despite the constant themes of drugs and addiction in general, e.g how Walter chooses making meth over his own family, how Jesse falls in and out of addiction throughout the whole series, etc. I wanted to focus on the relationship between Jesse and Jane, two addicts who know they can't rely on anyone and who both have vastly different issues but they share their addiction and Jane eventually ends up putting Jesse on even harder stuff than he was on previously. This eventually leads to her death after they promise to get clean together after doing it one last time. It's the 'one last time' that keeps so many addicts in the spiral. Promising it'll be the last time and then they end up doing it again, and again, and again. I want to focus on this in my project showing how hard it can be to actually be weened off an addiction and how just going cold turkey is much harder than many believe.

BoJack horseman

I want to take both contextual and visual inspiration from this series, Bojack Horseman contains a lot of drug references and addiction stories. This is portrayed mostly through Sarah Lynn and her slavery to every drug available, constantly taking mass amounts of both prescription drugs from an uncertified doctor who caters to her drug addiction by giving her whatever she wants and also mass amounts of illegal drugs as she's deep into the toxic Hollywood party scene. Another contributing factor to her addiction and eventual death is her only father figure, Bojack Horseman who constantly goes to her to drugs with whenever his own life inevitably falls apart. After he discovers Sarah Lynn is 9 months sober and completely clean he reignites her addiction after proposing a drug binge to her. This leads her to spiral for weeks as she misses major life events such as winning an Oscar award, while she is deep into addiction with Bojack This eventually leads to her heart breaking death after taking 'Bojack' a brand of heroine. The foreshadowing in this arc is devastating, as she lay in the planetarium with Bojack in her last moments she mutters the words 'I wanna be an architect' as she slowly drifts out of consciousness. Realising she's wasted her whole life away to the media and her addiction to both drugs, alcohol and attention to make her feel content ever since she entered the industry. Sarah Lynn is such a beautiful tragic and flawed character and her story is portrayed so well with how addicts feel towards their addiction, even if that addiction is just to be wanted. I want to take inspiration from her character mainly to understand how an addict behaves and craves their drug of choice even when they seem to everything they want. Another prominent case of addiction in Bojack Horseman is the title character himself who is continually shown too have a dependency to drugs and alcohol purely to supress his hatred for himself. This is shown multiple times throughout the show, however is mostly delved into in the last season, the season Bojack gets sober. Alcohol is represented as a dark celestial sky in liquid form, referencing the guilt he feels for Sarah Lynn's death. He also briefly gets addicted to prescription medication he starts taking for a stunt injury, leading him to faze in and out of reality constantly, I feel like this moment in the show is particularly useful for my project as I'm following the same idea of how addicts may not constantly have a grasp on reality due to their addiction. This addiction eventually spirals, leading him to become violent towards his co-star, choking her in a drug-fuelled rage. A constant theme within Bojack is him not changing until he hurts others, and even then he continually makes the same mistakes as he refuses to change or stray away from his addiction as he doesn't acknowledge it as an issue. I feel like Bojack and Sarah Lynn found comfort in each other through their shared addiction and I feel like this is the case for a lot of addicts. Having someone to share something so judged and 'dirty'. There's something so sentimental about sharing a problem with someone when you both don't want to get help even if it's destroying your life and I feel like this sentiment especially is useful towards my project while portraying addicts and their relationships towards addicts and non-addicts correctly.

T2 Trainspotting (2017)

The main theme in T2 Trainspotting is about the passage of time and the impact it has on individuals some more than others. The consequences of betraying friends and how the time apart and especially relapse can affect those relationships as some of the men are still active users, while some have found sobriety. I feel like this directly links towards my project as it heavily focuses on the themes of relapse and rehabilitation after being a slave to an addiction. I could use this both contextual and visual wise considering a lot of the environment follows the aesthetic I want to go for, this mainly being the grungy/dirty look of everything, setting the entire mood for the movie and also certain scenes. A great example of this is the 'saving spud' scene where after Spud suffers from violent withdrawals, he attempts to kill himself. He is saved at the last moment by Renton. The environment and general atmosphere in this scene sets the moment up so perfectly, him being surrounded by drug paraphernalia in his grimy-looking flat is such a perfect set up too this moment.

During the aftermath of the Cleansing of Laeran, Furlgrim recovered the Silver Blade of Laer, a blade holding the essence of Slaanesh. Similar to narcotics, Slaanesh holds the ability to slow ones mind, altering their thoughts to make them do things they wouldn't usually. Slaanesh's possession portrays a destruction of a person's personality through dependency. He became almost drunk on how the blade spoke to him, drunk off of the power and arrogance the blade allowed him to have. Fulgrim became a snake eating it's own tale - a common analogy used for addicts of any kind - also symbolism for sin and depravity. The cycle of obsession constantly growing bored, he was constantly seeking for the next bit of pleasure and perfection. Before finding the blade, Fulgrim was a very respected and loyal figure, some saying he made you feel like the most important person in the world when he spoke to you, this links back to the complete destruction of personality, as Slaanesh is the god of pleasure, Fulgrim found himself seeking out that pleasure. 'Do what you want, no matter the cost.' - This quote also links heavily too the mindset addicts have. They constantly seek out whatever they want, no matter what consequences they may receive, because an addict does not care, unless it's fuelling their addiction. As one's addiction would progress throughout the years, so did his carelessness which is the case for any type of addict. Discarding the sword his brother made for him, the only sword he used up until that point, for the blade. - Analogy for how he discarded his family and friends for addiction, this being extremely ironic when he murders his brother in a drug fuelled rage, with the blade. He collapses to the ground sober left with nothing but emptiness. I feel like the tragic story of Fulgrim's fall to Slaanesh is a maybe unintended but still an analogy for addiction, portraying his downward spiral as he succumbs to Slaanesh. - I feel like this is good for my project as it portrays addiction as a feeling rather than a physical thing (such as a substance) it shows how alienated a person can feel when deep into addiction even if their addiction doesn't have a noticeable cause.

On a completely different note - I want to take inspiration for the psychedelic visuals from Warhammer, mainly from Slaanesh's offshoots and her armies, along with the Harlequins as I feel like they nicely tie into the aesthetic I want to go for.

The inspiration I'm drawing from this episode of south park is the psychedelic visuals Kenny experiences while under the influence of cat urine. The basic summary of this episode is: The kids discover they can get high from cat pee so the boys try doing this using Eric's cat Mr kitty. After Kenny gets really high from this, the episode changes art styles and aesthetics drastically to a Heavy Metal (1981) style as it takes you through his drug trip.
