Art reveal what people think, feel, lived (experiences). It is the power to share to the world your emotions and opinions.
Leo Tolstoy once said, " If only the spectators or auditors are infected by the feeling which the author has felt, it is art.". When spectators or auditors are looking or listening to art they should create a feeling. They might feel compassionate, can relate to the artist's feeling or can develop an other feeling (they understand an other message that will make them feel differently). For instance a song. Songs are expressed not by pictures like paintings but by words (lyrics). While listening to a song you can relate to them or feel compassion towards the artist or understand the words in a complete different way.

Everyone can become an artist. To make art you don't need any artistic talent you just have to be able to express yourself in a way that the auditors or spectators can feel something. It doesn't have to be the same feeling or message because everyone understand a different thing even-thought they are looking or listening to the same thing. You do need training to be an even better artist. For example two people are doing the same dance performance although one is super talented but do not use any emotions in her/his performance and the other one is less talented but expresses her feelings. The second performance will touch more people and they will understand the message behind the art but the first one they will just see steps to a music. So you do not have to be talented to become an artist.

As we saw in the art performance of "Comedian", the viewers can influence an art piece as much as the artist himself. Even though it's just a regular banana with regular duct tape, this piece attracts an absurd amount of attention from the general public. It is so different from what we usually call artwork, and yet its license is worth $150,000!
Why? Because society is so interested in it, that it is eventually considered an art piece.

There is no such thing as "the perfect art piece". We all judge art differently and have different ideals. That means that you cannot truly say that a piece is better than another ; that is only YOUR opinion. Someone else can view art in an other way than your own. For example, some people think that Rap is the best kind of music, while others can absolutely reject it and prefer classical music. For this reason, we cannot compare different artworks in a way that suggests that one is better than the other. However, we can compare their characteristics. As an example: this one is more colorful ; this one seems more depressing.

There are many factors that come into play when we ask if someone can be labeled as an artist. Here is what I think: no one is simply "an artist". You can only be an artist of your own work. Say, for example, you draw something once. Does that make you an artist? No, I believe that you do not simply become "an artist", but rather the artist OF your painting. Put simply, the word artist does not go by itself.

Should schools encourage their students to create art? Does it have a place in the curriculum just as math and history, for example?

From my point of view, art should be taught in school. It helps develop many skills such as communication and critical thinking. It also is a way for students to express themselves, while developing their creativity. Students are under a lot of pressure in school, and art is a great way to relieve that stress. Like Jean Dubuffet (french painter/sculptor) once said, “Art is a language, an instrument of knowledge, an instrument of communication.” I agree with this saying, and I think it proves why art should be taught in school. It is like a whole other language. We can express through art what can not be said with words, and to be able to do that, is very valuable. It is great for the development of a child/teenager. In addition to that, the skills learned in art are very useful for other subjects. Arts would even improve academic skills. According to the website publicschoolreview.com, students taking various art classes "demonstrate improved verbal, reading, and math skills, and also show a greater capacity for higher-ordered thinking skills such as analyzing and problem-solving.” The arts do stimulate the students’ minds and help them improve.. Making art part of the curriculum has benefits for both students and schools, and I believe it is for the best.

As I see it, we can only judge if art is good or bad for ourselves. Everyone has different opinions, and there’s no instrument to measure a piece of art’s quality. Everyone also bases their judgment on different elements. Some will think a work of art is good because of the emotions it made them feel, while others will judge badly a work of art because the colors used are not their favorite. There is no way to know who is right or who is wrong because, with art, there is no right or wrong. It’s up to every single one of us to make up our thoughts on an art piece. I agree with (actor) Billy Boyd’s saying: “I think all art is subjective - that whoever’s watching it or listening to it will decide whether it’s good or bad.” When it comes to art, everyone is a judge, we have the right to think what we want of it, and we can base our opinion on anything.

What makes someone an artist?/What is the purpose of art?

From my personal perspective, an artist is a person who has the ability, through his art, to make people feel something. A song would be more than words, a painting more than a picture, a dance more than steps. Being able to create art is impressive. Being able to pass a message through your art is the ultimate goal though. Edgar Degas (french painter), once said, "Art is not what you see, but what you make others see". I share his opinion on the topic. As I see it, creating art is about more than the looks of it. Making others feel something is what artists should work towards. The audience should see something more than the "surface" of the work. I believe a beautiful picture is not enough to call yourself an artist. Moreover, according to Wikipedia, "emotional responses" are regarded by experts as "the keystone to experiencing art". In addition to that, the emotional response by the receiver of the art would even be "the purpose of artistic expression". This illustrates well my thoughts, the purpose of art is not to make something beautiful. It is to make something meaningful. In my eyes, someone is an artist if he stirs up an emotional reaction with his art.

Throughout history, art has had many different functions. This makes it difficult to assign it a single purpose because art is created for many different and unique reasons. The purposes of art can be qualified as non-motivated or motivated.

We create non-motivated art because it is an essential part of being human. It is our nature to use our creativity, even if it has no utility. A type of non-motivated art is the art created to experience the mysterious. As Albert Einstein once said, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” Einstein is explaining how the mysteries of life can be an inspiration for art. Non-motivated art can also aim to express the imagination, a fundamentally human trait. It can be an outlet for our thoughts and emotions and a medium where we can invent, experiment and explore to our heart’s content. One artist that let his imagination run wild was Salvador Dali. A Spanish surrealist, his art is often bizarre and dreamlike. For example, in “The Persistence of Memory,” he toys with the concepts of space and time in an imaginative way.

Motivated art is created with a specific goal in mind. This could be to judge an aspect of society, encourage social or political change, reveal a specific emotion, address personal psychology, or simply as a form of communication. Engaged art is a type of motivated art with which artists can defend a cause, criticize society and encourage social change. An example of an engaged artist is Gilles Cenazandotti, a french artist who uses plastic waste to make sculptures of endangered animals. In “The Scream” by Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch, the artist is conveying emotions such as terror, anxiety and helplessness, another form of motivated art.

To answer this question, I must define the term “artist”. According to the Oxford Dictionary, an artist is someone who creates art as a profession or a hobby. Although a multitude of artistic disciplines exist, they all have certain elements in common. To be an artist, one needs a combination of three elements: natural talent, creativity, skill. Natural talent could be due to a genetic advantage (a brain more suited to musicality, for example), and is reinforced and nourished by certain environments (living in a musical family). Creativity can be developed and is used as inspiration to make art. Skill is acquired through time and with great amounts of training. I believe practice is more important than an innate ability when it comes to art.

In today’s society, however, our definition of art has considerably expanded. Some argue that anything could be considered as (modern) art nowadays. Furthermore, social media has made the broadcasting of our talents increasingly easy. Like never before, amateur artists can reach millions of people through a single “post”. For example, if a student enjoys drawing and playing the french horn, she can publish her art online. Is this person an artist? I believe that people that have an artistic hobby can indeed refer to themselves as artists, but must bear in mind that they are not professionals. That is to say, they are not paid for their art.

How does engaged art impact society?

“Socially engaged art” is art that defends a cause or criticizes a problem of our society. In that case, it is referred to as “protest art”. Today, there are many engaged artists with interests that range from environmental issues such as plastic pollution (Marine DeBris) to cultural identity (Oreet Ashery) to feminism (Barbara Kruger). Ai Weiwei, for instance, is an internationally recognised Chinese artist. He actively defies the Chinese Government by speaking out against their stance on democracy and abuse of human rights. He is also concerned with the issues concerning refugees. Engaged artists like Ai Weiwei impact society by educating the population about injustice while inspiring them to act. I believe that engaged art can create enormous social and political change. Firstly, it brings the public’s attention to an issue and educates them about it. It denounces a flaw in society or human behaviour, making us reflect on how the world works or how we live our lives. Finally, it can offer solutions on how to solve this problem, and more specifically, how we as individuals can make a difference. This shows that engaged art creates a conversation, which is the first step to solving an issue. The spectators of pieces of engaged art might create new opinions and be inspired into criticizing a societal failing or fighting for a cause. This, in turn, instils values into our society and acts as a vehicle for social change. I can also mention a more personal example concerning the impacts of engaged. I have been very moved by engaged art in the past, and have tried to change my behavior to support the causes I am passionate about. Last year I had the opportunity to watch a documentary about fast fashion entitled “The True Cost”. It opened my eyes to the devastating environmental and social impacts of the clothes we wear. From then on I have attempted to change my consumer habits to make them more sustainable. To conclude, engaged art can create positive change in society by raising awareness, proposing solutions and inspiring action among its' spectators.

In my opinion, the most important thing to become an artist is perseverance. Even though artists who became famous within the first try exist, they are a minority. Many great artists prove that hard work and determination always pay off. In order to be a great artist, you have to be able to learn from your failures and never give up because an obstacle comes in the way. For example, Walt Disney failed before succeeding. Indeed, the artist was fired from the Kansas City Star (a journal) because his editor felt he "lacked imagination and had no good ideas." He did not give up and continued to work hard to follow his dreams, and eventually became one of the world's most famous people and an iconic figure of the cinematic world by founding the Walt Disney Company in 1923. This example proves artists should not be afraid of failure because it is a part of life, and can lead to better opportunities. You have to persevere, and eventually, it will pay off.

Can one become an artist without having experienced great suffering or struggles in life?

Although one can make art without going through rough experiences in life, I believe that experiencing struggles may impact the artwork. This is because the art feels more real and raw as we can almost feel the emotion that is transferring into the artwork. This could also allow other people may be feeling the same emotion to relate with someone with something in common. For example, nowadays we are seeing rapid growth in the emo music genre where artists would share personal experiences through their music and people would be able to relate with them every day. One example of a leading emo artist that talks about his emotions in order for his fan base to relate would be XXXTENTACION. He was a young artist in his 20''s who witnessed the suicide of a close friend of his and then he made music about it and managed to create a community that shared these experiences of trauma, depression and suicide prevention. So I believe that one can become an artist without having experienced some kind of dark past and still create good art but an artist that has gone through or is going through some kind of marking event makes their artwork have a different impact on the public and more real.

Firstly, art influences society by changing opinions, creating values and translating experiences across history. Research has shown art affects the fundamental sense of self. Painting, sculpture, music, literature and the other arts are often considered to be the backbone to societies memory. Furthermore, artists are one of the most important members of society because they help us to envision our thought that may not be tolerated in the social and political patterns of our society. “Art is the queen of all sciences communicating knowledge to the generations of the world” (Leonardo da Vinci). Art is also a reflection on society because the arts include various branches of painting, music, literature, dance and other creative activity, they have a significant impact on society, religion, and education, thus deserve the same reverence bestowed upon the sciences.

Art reveals what people think. It gives an impact on people. It gives opinions, and role models. Nellie Bly is a courageous journalist that stood up for herself . She worked really hard to become a revolutionary artist. Nellie Bly she was a role model to a lot of women, she inspired them to become journalists. She also changes the point of views of people. She said: "I said i could and I would, and I did." and "I have never written a word that did not come from my heart. I never shall" Another example would be Jay-z. He's a famous raper who first was a drug dealer before becoming an artist. He's an activist that has a lot of impact on others like the people on the streets. In his songs he talks about his life in the streets how it was. It shows the truth about the world. In society art is a role model and a way of saying and showing the truth. It helps people (Nellie Bly- women- Jay-z- people from the streets) and society in itself.
