Portfolio advice

• Keep it simple.

• Most design relevance at the top

• Look at what work the brands you want to work for do, so you can provide more of this in your portfolio.

• See how you can apply your skills that are relevant in the role you wish to work in  

• Make it obvious of what it is you want to do in your portfolio and social media.

• Look at studios and see who they follow and follow them.

• To update Instagram and post weekly.

  
  

 CV guidance 

• Making it portrait and not Landscape

• To not make it too decorative

• Keep it simple, with some design elements.

• Keep text colour in black or white only.

Initially I had my CV at landscape, along with coloured text along with more than two colours present in the background which made it look over the top and less professional, after attending this session I have gained useful feedback, in which I can now apply to my CV.

2.       Building industry contacts

 By consistently going to design events, volunteering and posting design work on social media platforms, such as LinkedIn and Instagram, this will help me to expand my contacts and open doors to opportunities because this will help other creatives to remember my presence in person and online. Since the industry is massive, competitive, and very social I need to make a good impression and help myself to get my name out there. Therefore I should stay in touch with everyone and continue to make new contacts because again this is key to job offers, being supportive and cheerful to other’s achievements, making myself more active and visible online and in person, selling myself, produce business cards, being genuine, being confident, gaining professional industry advice from the ADM careers team, Luke Tonge, other experts and also advice from other creatives. I should also practise good communication skills and carry on enhancing my skills to perfect them and entering design competitions. These are all important factors because they will mould me to become industry ready and help me stand out.

3.       Online

Being online, sharing work, joining conversations, and commenting on posts will all contribute to being an active creative. I learned to post work even if I do not like it, this will help me to push myself out of my comfort zone and perfectionism because it will challenge me to post something. When I have done collaborations or attended workshops such as creative exchange, I should make sure to tag people, because it shows I was there, and I am active. Today I also learned and practised coming up with short paragraphs to help me connect and communicate with other individuals within the industry. When connecting with someone I should always keep in mind to send a message first making sure to have a friendly approach.  

When posting I should keep the tone of voice in mind and think about whether I want to portray myself in a casual or professional tone. For myself I think somewhere between casual and formal will help me to show authenticity because I am not being too professional or too laid back and I think this is important because it shows you can relate to people on a personal level but also being mindful of what to say. Also, when doing teamwork, I should also tag the people who I have collaborated with. For example, below is a quick sentence I could use when introducing new work to my peers and other creatives. ‘Hi guys so this is something I have been working on over the past few weeks, it has been a fun process but slightly challenging. However, I am happy with my outcomes, and I would like to continue my path down 3D and motion. Please also check out my work, collaborations with…’. This will invite more people to check my group work out and be a space for open communication and a way to make new connections.

Because I could not use this Jacket during the shoot, I improvised by having edited the jacket in and masked onto the clothes instead, using After Effects.
