A house in the woods

By Elizibeth Walsh

A small cottage, in the forest, not perfect but fit for the need, big windows with gorgeous flowers and succulents all over. White paint all over the outside, with a small swing in the backyard. It seemed nobody had lived there. Moss growing all over, but pretty moss. It smelled of cookies and milk. A small oven and a table, with China teapots and plates. A little seat in the corner, with a half-knit sweater on the edge. A small picture, with a family in it. Someone had been ripped out, though. In the littlest room, there was a paper, with writing on. The paper was old and written with ink, and splatters all over. It seemed to be wet, not with water, but with tears. The letter had written, “Dearest- the name had been smudged off when the water fell. The writing was beautiful- no prepossessing. It had been dated from years back, but the words were crisp and new. Full of love. The ending was heartbreaking. I shed a tear onto the paper, and it dropped gracefully. The house was old, and creaky, but I still wanted to make this home. Along with the letter, there were two envelopes: One dedicated to “My Love” the other, had not been written, although it had three roses and a poem. I didn’t want to read it for it might be personal. Something was inside it, peeking through. It was the piece to the picture I had seen earlier. This house had been built by the owners, and everything they owned was in here. I walked into the bedroom, and as soon as I stepped onto the tile floor, something caught my eye. A flower, sitting in a vase with a letter on a white nightstand with a flower print. That letter was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I shed another tear. That small cottage in the forest.
