We learn about Isla's constant idea of light as hope, and that this comes in many forms whether from a person or pastries. We learn about this new character that has been introduced in the chapter. Leo is also from the Nella Dan, from which we get an understanding that he is a cook along with Bo, due to his cooking skills and the way Isla describes that he makes the pastries with "skill and care."

Imagery, "Watched the large hands covered in flour stretch out the sticky pastry in long, thin strips." This creates a vivid image for the reader to fully step into the narrators' shoes and understand what the character/narrator is going through.

Symbolism, "The light coming through the porthole made the whole gallery fill with yellow." This idea of light representing hope for Isla. She sees this through the pastries, which are made by Leo, which has brought something good to her (pastries) and she sees this as a sign.
