The Portuguese brought clocks, eyeglasses, tobacco, firearms, and other unfamiliar items from Europe. The item that the Portuguese had brought to Japan that made the most impact were the firearms. This religion was more appealing to them due to the European goods they wanted from the newcomers. At first, Japan's leaders tolerated the success the missionaries were having because their economy benefited from having foreign traders around. However, by 1612, the Shogun feared religious uprisings so he banned Christianity. Over the next few decades, Japan leaders continued to repress this religion, ruthlessly persecuted Christians and killed or drove missionaries out of Japan.
