"He'd been all smiles, all business as usual, and despite the swollen hand...he'd been waving to people across the yard like there wasn't a damn thing on his mind other than serving them their burgers" (Page 113)

Quinn is slowly starting to recognize that Paul is the bad guy in this situation while still dealing with the notion that Paul would do anything to protect him. He still sees Paul as this big brother figure but begins to start to see him in a different light. Quinn's view right now is that Paul should be talking about the situation rather than avoiding it. Paul "serving burgers" is a normal activity which is something that is trying to bring the attention off of the major situation at hand. His behavior is just avoiding the situation at all costs, which is an example of white fragility. - LUCY

"My gut wanted me to rush to help Paul"(Reynolds & Kiely, 38)

This is at the very beginning of Quinn's story. This is when he is watching Rashad get beaten. As he is watching, Quinn notices that the cop is Paul, one of his best friend's brothers, and someone who acted like an older brother to him. When he sees this happening, Quinn wants to help Paul because he thinks Rashad did something wrong. This makes sense, because Paul is a cop, and people normally assume that cops are good, so Rashad must be bad. Although normally it wouldn't make sense for Quinn to want to help Paul, because of how well he knows and trusts Paul, he feels the need to help him. In this quote, Quinn still thinks that Paul is in the right and Rashad is in the wrong, even after he watches what happens.

-Toby

"Look, man, I'm not trying to say anything bad about Rashad, I'm just saying that spray painting 'Rashad is absent again today on the concrete in front of the school is like...extreme...he's not dead" (Page 175)

Quinn's attitude completely changes during his conversation with English. He now believes that the publicity is going maybe too far because well Rashad is not dead. English points out that he could be and it seems as though Quinn just brushes this off. He doesn't seem to realize that this situation is about Rashad and not about himself. Quinn doesn't recognize that Rashad being beaten up is as bad as it actually was. In the scene, Quinn is making excuses for Paul and saying that it was extreme of someone to comment on Rashad's absence. His use of white fragility is very noticeable if you know what that is and right now Quinn is definitely having white fragility in terms of this situation.

LUCY

Quinn was always close to Paul and he look at him as a brother. After seeing the attack with his own eyes he realizes what kind of person Paul is. He is scared to be around him and does not want to be around him. This is bad for many reasons but Quinn has many friendships that associate him with Paul. At the moment Quinn does not want to be and is scared to be around Paul.
Sloane Lender

Here Quinn has just finished watching the video and he gets on the phone with Jill. Quinn wants this to not be his problem, but he recognizes that it is. In this section, Quinn realizes that he needs to act because it is his problem because he was there and because Rashad goes to his school. Here, it seems Quinn has made up his mind about doing something, but he is not sure what to do yet, which is why he says "I just don't know what to do"(Reynolds & Kiely, 182) Quinn now fully understands that Paul is in the wrong, which is why it is hard for him to do anything because then Paul would find out and, even though Quinn knows Paul was in the wrong, he doesn't want to be on bad terms with him, because Paul was like an older brother to Quinn.

- Toby

Quinn had never thought of Paul as somebody dangerous. He had always felt protected by Paul. But as we start to see is that Quinn is seeing that Paul protected him and hurt others. Although he had not been hurt by Paul,Quinn realizes that he could have causes Paul to hurt somebody. Paul was able to fight people and he did it for the people he loves benefit. Quinn now thinks that it could have been partly his fault for Marc Blair getting hurt.
Sloane Lender
