This theme really fits with the book because many of the characters would never be in the situations they would've been in if they never took a chance. The majority of the book is set in a post-apocalyptic setting where characters use opportunities to thrive in this environment. Though, there are some instances where the book would recall events before the pandemic spread. At those moments of recollection, we would see characters go through the hardships in life, trying their best to hop on another opportunity.
