How Being a Psychologist Changed My Family

When I began studying psychology,I started to act as if I knew everything. This overconfident behavior not only irritated my peers but my husband as well. Each time something would go wrong in our lives I would think that I had all the answers, over time this began to ruin our family. I stopped paying attention to his opinions and began creating my own idea of him.We argued everyday until I realized that I didn’t know everything.

When coping with the changes I endure as a psychologist, I have learned that this job can be overwhelming and sometimes I simply just need a break. I have always done more than expected of me, and I rarely make time for myself. Being all about my job has caused me to hate it, so in order to obtain my passion I had to learn when to step back.

When being faced with patients especially children I have always felt defeated when I couldn’t save everyone. I often think about my patients outside of work, and wonder if they will struggle forever. Eventually I fall into depression knowing there’s something I could have done if I’d tried harder, or if something goes wrong I’d blame myself. In order to get myself out of this depressing state I began to think about other psychologist with more experience who could possibly help the people that I couldn’t. With this mindset I have learned to push forward and to grow so that I would one day be able to help every patient that I encounter.

I would encourage one to have patience when dealing with mentally ill people it can often be stressful and traumatic. I would also encourage people not to allow the stress of patients to negatively affect their lives. It is often common for people who pursue psychology to become “know it alls” which eventually destroys families.
